If you want to share it publicly then perhaps post it up until the cyclist comes into view before he can be identified or edit it to blur his face or something. Out of respect to the cyclist, don't post the collision.

Nothing super dramatic, but my wife caught a near-hit after a commercial van decided the red light wasn't really for him.

Hi, first post. Was wondering about possibility of mounting camera in ceiling near driver's head so that it would not only capture what driver is seeing but (with wide-angle view) also the view from the rear-view inside mirror. This would eliminate having to use two cameres and twice the recording memory. Do you think that this setup would work well?

    Thanks.

There'll probably be others who are more qualified on this than I am, but I've found the wider the lens (i.e. 1.5mm vs. 4mm), the more distorted the image. That makes it much more difficult to judge speed and distance should you ever have to use the video as evidence in court. Even if the angle was wide enough, the left and right third of the image would really be warped.

    it won't work.
The camera has to be placed on the driver eyes in order to work.
If the camera is mounted on the ceiling, you'll see the driver eyes

    first post, long time lurker

I don't think you would be able to beat the laser on this one. I have done TONS and TONS of testing with gps speeds vs. odometer speeds and have found that you can not depend on the gps speeds. They are usually off by 2-4 mph on average. The laser systems are very prevalent here in Northern California as radar has been moved out of most of our departments over here.

We had (I am no longer involved) gps speeds logged in 8 of our patrol cars and I had to test each and every one of them in our pilot programs. It also measured g force so we could see how hard they were turning/accelerating/braking and we had the video feeding back to our dispatch center (4 views, plus the option of audio)

Good luck with the court date.

Also that information above about the testing doesn't apply to the laser, just the radar.

I have copied the setup of erkme73!
    Great idea - thanks!

    1. For DVR I used:

    2. For speed overlay:
5Hz GPS Speed Video Overlay Unit w/ Ext. Antenna from pic-osd.com
    http://www.blackboxcamera.com/pic-osd/gpsspd_5HZ.htm

    3. As for cam I used: TT314S-BL33: 1/3" LG B/W Mini Digital Camera, 420TV, 3.6mm Lens.
It is B/W but operates at 0,05Lux at night which is important.

    Here is the outcome:

I can post some pics of my setup if someone is interested.

    cheers
