Thats standard with black box units. If they didnt do that then the chance of the whole entire video being corrupted would be higher. So instead they break it up into one minute segments. Mine also has a battery, but never is the clip corrupted. I guess the unit I have knows to finsih and close the file out.

Mine though is thankfully very accurate, but it does not put the information on the video, other then date. Instead, in order to get mine to show MPH and GPS with Google Maps, I have to use the software bundled with the camera. I take my camera system very serious, even though it is fun, I use it strictly for accidents because Miami is like driving through destruction derby. Also people are so willing to lie. With my last accident, he said the light was green, which was a lie, he felt kind of stupid, even though the accident was still my fault.

I understand why they break up the video but it's a bit annoying. I suppose the solution is to let the car run for at least a minute after parking if you need the last minute of the video.

Well I use Cyberlink PowerDirector. Its pretty good and fast at everything. Only time I seem to have issues is when I try to overlay the video from the rear onto the front video. i think thats caused by the cr@ppy system im using to do it though.

It also bothers me that the GS600 loses some frames, sometimes up to a few seconds of video between files.

Well, I just tested it, I'll post some pictures/videos soon. The USB capture card (SIIG) does not work with Minicam (with compression), looking for an alternative now (capture and soft).

The lights are not bothering me that much now, I think inside the garage they were much more visible. I wonder if they have an on/off feature for the led lights?

Got it for $85 a great deal at the local Fry's. It's about $100.00 at Amazon.

I think that the USB capture card has a great impact on the brightness, contrast and hue. I'll try another one, if I solve my compression problems.

I'll upload a video tomorrow. It's not a small camera by any means, but the truck is not small, so it kind of works.

Note that the camera exagerates the red glow a lot, I don't know why. It's still visible at night, but not during daylight.

I don't think it's too big in there at all.

Camera sensors pick up IR. Point any TV remote at your camera and you'll see it flash

Are you using that as a "dash" cam?

I dont either. During the day the IRs turn off. I think the camera is very discreate. The camera that you used to take a picture with is making it look brighter then it is. I think it looks ok.... I have three facing my rear and ive had tons of police behind me and never have i been pulled over.

I have a different model of Swan in a non-automotive application and I don't see any red glow. Its probably the camera image sensor picking up the IR like they normally would. Can you see the red glow with naked eye?

Also the IR LED's usually switch off automatically during the day. You should be able to see a light sensor near the LED's.

Would love to see how you've mounted the camera inside the bumper and how you are protecting it from the dust and elements.

Ah, that is it then...LOL. I just want that one there to help with parking, to entertain the kids in the back (I plan to route it to the back seat too), and just because.

Now since I've found the $250 plus for the GS600, I'm thinking of going this route all the way. Initially I would go DVR's the GS600, and have 3 to 4 cameras around the car (I have the OEM rear cam that I hacked to a button where I can turn it on all the time, but it's too wide angle and too low to see further behind, but it works).

By this route I mean buying something like this ($100 12v 4 channel DVR or this $175 12v 4 channel DVR with 500GB HDD). Now I'm planning Minicam to embed GPS/OBD, but since I have been having issues with win7 instant on wake up with my SIIG capture card, I think that computer recording is maybe too unreliable...so a standalone dvr might be the way to go.

    Good to know!

Thanks for your input, I can still see the red glow if it's night time, in the garage at some angles (like behind each led), but not in the daytime, not even with the camera.

Sure, I'll post my pictures, but it was a hack job/proof of concept style. I still can return everything to Fry's if I need to, so it was important to keep it stock.

Basically I plan to by something like this 5 pack screen protector for iphone ($1.00 free ship) and cut it to fit the lens. This will hopefully protect it from bugs and visible scratches on the recordings.

I also put a thin steel platform below it to protect againt road debris coming from under the bumper, but since it's water proof (claimed), I'm not concerned with water at all. Of course, I'm going to my local high pressure jet carwash before the 30 day return expires and see what happens...

Okay the $175.00 dvr listed above requires 19v, I'm not going to buy a carnetix for that. So there's the $114, one, specs:

    Technical Details

    • Resolution & FPS Setup by Each Channel.
    • Mouse, remote, batter and SATA cable included.
    • SATA devices supported.
    • VGA ON Board Built-in VGA (1920 x 1080).
    • EZ DDNS Only 2 steps, monitoring in 10 seconds.
    • Supports 16 Languages.
    • CMS (Central Management System) supports unlimited DVR.
    • Intelligent 3G/GPRS Mobile Surveillance: Symbian, Windows Mobile, JAVA, iPhone, Blackberry, Android.
    • GUI with 32 bit True Color.
    • Upgrade Firmware by USB or Network.
    • H.264 Main Profile Compression Technology, which save 20% or more recording size than traditional H.264 Baseline Profile codec.
    • 2 USB allows to operate DVR by mouse or touch panel screen. Triplex for Recording, Playback and Network.
    • 4CH Real-Time display on 120fps/NTSC Supports D1 / HD1 / CIF Resolutions.
    • Triple Stream, recording at D1 and viewing at CIF remotely Supports 100% Independent Network.
    • Watermark & Scrambling examination to verify recorded files.
So far, dvr plus camera, cheaper than the $250.00 questionable upgrade camera. But it does not have gps, but lots of extra features built in: plug into a Xenarc/Lilli/Mimo and you got touch panel operation, h253 compression, 3G remote monitoring... Plus 29 4 1/2 stars reviews on Amazon...

Open the box, remove six screws, install a cheap 250GB or smaller (you don't want to record ALL your squidish behavior, right?) and you're set.

There are issues, like the compression makes it hard to identify faces...but cars and traffic are big enough for it, I think? What do you guys think? Space is not an issue...

Very tempting. What do you guys think?
