    Phidgits and electrical questions

    I have ordered a phidgets 8/8/8 and i had a few questions about wiring it up to my power windows. What is the best way to wire this up? My initial thoughts were to use a relay, but then i realized that the power window motor works off reverse polarity. Then i thought i could run the ground line for the motor to the phidget and work it that way, but i dont think it will support the voltage. Any suggestions or information about relays and reverse polarity? Im trying to wrap my head around this.

    Since you have 8/8/8 you good to go. You need one contact per function. Window up/down are two contacts. Just duplicate the window switches.

    what about the voltages? I know the circuit is a 30a circuit. I was under the impression that I needed relays because the outputs are only 5v.

    You're right in saying that you need relays because the outputs of the phidget are 5V. Even if they were 12V, they wouldn't be able to handle that kind of current anyway. For your situation, I would recommend that you try to use 5V relays to interface with the window switches, as they are usually lower current than the window motors themselves (if the switches control the motors through relays). If you know that the circuit is 30A though, you will have to try to find 5V relays that are rated for 30A, or you will need to use a 5V relay to switch a larger 12V relay, or you will need to use a transistor and diode to switch the larger 12V relay.

    And for the reversing of polarity, you can use 3 per window motor.

    thanks for your help. I waiting untill after x-mas to get some money then I need to clean the garage so I can stay warm. Soon as I get the relays I will update.

    so I'm having some trouble understanding your diagram. Is it really necessary to have three relays per window? Also in my initial design I had the relays wired to the switch and not directly to the motor. I want to make shure I have this right before I start ordering more parts. This is kind of irrevelant, but I am looking into getting an arduino so it will be stand alone and will not need to be connected to the pc. Anyone have any expirence with this?

    Not that i question your reasons for doing this. But what would you really use the computer controlled windows for? I mean you have switches already right? so instead of pushing button on door you push button on computer? Would be neat if you could remotely open and close windows but then your carputer would need to be on.

    So i just read the arduino specs. looks like you wouldn't need the Phidgits then since the arduino is practcly the same thing. If had remote capabilities then you could remotly open/close windows

    Maybe you could use arduino's temp capabilities to lower windows when the car reachs 100 degrees...

    I think if you wanted simple you could use one relay to up and one relay to down and not use a third relay. Looks like maybe the third relay in the above layout would prevent the software from pushing up and down at the same time. But if the switch is only switching polarity to the window motor then two will work fine. if both are pressed then the window will stop and the motor would see 0volts even if there was 12volts at both sides. the potential voltage would be zero. Almost like an electric brake.

    More on the layout: the numbers given are the legs of the relay, 85, 86, 87 etc... if you purchase a car relay it will have these numbers on it. But they most likely will be 12volts relays. Not sure if they make 5volt relays like that? I'm not use to car relays so i've only seen the big 12v ones, since the car runs off 12volts its the most common.

    The other thing you may need to worry about is the driver window sometimes has a special switch that lets the window go all the way down by itself. You know the one where you press down a little harder and it clicks again.

    No I really appro Kate your info. My. Origional plan was to run an app on my iPhone to controls everything and with the arduine it seems more feesable. Thanks again for the info and I will keep u all updated.

    Here are my thoughts on simple wiring. take in to consideration that the phidgets or arduine cant control these relays since they are 12V and not 5V. You could use a npn transistor tied to 12Volts to control them. I'm sure there are tons of layouts similar to this on this forum. good luck

    2 relays per switch in parallel is enough. This way you can still use the factory switches if needed. Just make sure there high current relays. So your device will need 4 outputs for the relays
