    Radio Hacking

So Im working on my first car PC for my 1948 Hudson Commodore project. Im planning on modding the original radio face plate to have the original radio preset/volume/tuner knob be hot keys. I have an old Belkin n52 that Im planning on using to be the interface. My question is how to tap into the circuits that are printed(?) into clear plastic. Pic below. Any advice is appreciated.

I tried to do something just like this on a thinkpad T30. Now the power button doesn't work anymore. The best bet is to try to trace the buttons to actual traces on the pcb, or some wire in that ribbon cable that it looks like it is attached to.
