Getting the garage door to sense when the car is in the driveway is actually the easy part. It will actually happen the other way around.
I have 3g internet in my car and GPS.
I'll use the program, Proximity, on my sheeva plug and that will figure out when I'm near my house with GPS.
I have an old, old, old laptop which uses minimal amounts of power that I'll mount up in the rafters of my garage. I'll hook that baby up to an extra fusion brain, and write a C# app to control the doors. Hook it into my home's wifi network, open up a port for it, and tell proximity to send it the right command.
I like how after doing so much in the Car PC hobby ideas like this seem trivial to accomplish. I would have never thought about doing something like this two years ago.
Sounds awesome, be keen to trial this or what i was thinking was you could simply wire up your controller for the door via serial on/off and use an app to translate this to trigger the remote button when touching a button on the screen.

That makes sense. I'd just buy an extra remote and use that in the house. Remotes have pretty limited range in car, so the proximity method could do it while driving up the street. But it has to know you're not driving away. That would be bad. And a laptop and fusion brain for 1 thing seems like a waste. :)
Right now I have one of the standard garage door remotes in the car wired up to the fusion brain. So when I push a button in centrafuse it does open my door. I want it to be more automatic than this and if I forget to shut my garage door one day, it would be awesome to be able to do it across the internet.Quote:

Just noticed this thread, figured I'd give you some help if you need it. I'm wiring in a X10 unit called UM506 which will take commands from my computer to open/close the garage door. That way I can use BlueProximity to sense when I'm near the house or I can manually do it via SSH from my phone.

Funny that some of the replies in here remind me of solar trackers "that aren't worth the energy" - LOL - they use CPUs!!
So many ways to sense - whether IR beam, induction/proximity, noise, etc.
But the the 2nd part - security - eg, RFID, optic or RF or inductive codes etc. (That part can be turned on by the basic sensor with a timeout to save power.)
