I will start taking preorders at a reduced price though in a few days and as you are in Australia, I will give you a discount anyway as I want to get this tested in DAB+ mode as we don't have it here in the UK. I think I am correct in saying Australia is DAB+ only and doesn't support standard DAB?
The HQCT was that, a device built from the ground up for the car enviroment, you are not really comparing apples with apples. This is similar to the TPMS which was something else turned into a more practical use than just reverse sensors, again this was an expensive item especially for us who's exchange rate determines whether we buy or not.
As REVKEV said this would kill the option for us locally, but then again with enough people involved we should be able to bang something together far less that the suggested cost from said company..

The unit we have designed is designed specifically for the car environment and tuned for this reason so I think we are comparing apples and more apples actually.
The thing is, nobody else will never be able to get the Venice chips alone without taking apart old radios. Try contacting Frontier Silicon and you will soon find out the minimum order quantities. The only reason I can get them is through a friend whos company buys them in very large quantities for their own use and thus I am able to buy them in smaller quantities from them.

Like RevheadKev and Kosti, i am worried at the price of the unit. We always get shafted with shipping + units that are slightly different for Australia (in this case DAB+ only)
The most expensive part of the device is the Venice, and that can be found for $60-$70 locally from a doner radio. Venice 7 doesn't offer us much extra over 5.1, and dont see the need in using the 7.
I have got my doner 5.1, i also have half the parts for the programmer, and need to build the interface board...
craigbrass, I dont have a problem with what your doing, but because it "may" not work here in Australia, and the limited support we usually get down here, the prices may be too steep for the average joe with a CarPC to hope he gets clear reception..
The regular DAB+ portable radios sound like a fax machine while driving in some locations, and FM is crystal clear!

The main problem is software.
If the software is standardized across the 5, 5.1 and 7 then there is no problem. Then its just a question of plugging the module in and you are away. The main issue is over here in the UK we don't have DAB+ so there is no way of testing.
I'll have a think about this one and then come back.

Just did some googling and found the following 2 interesting things about DAB+ reception in Australia...
1. Frequent dropouts were experienced in June 2009 when DAB+ first switched on as many stations apparantly were not broadcasting full power
2. External antenna vastly improves reception to elliminate dropouts (your gargle)
Here is a link to an external DAB+ antenna for the Pure Highway unit. Maybe we can source something similar for the Venice modules if they have a connection for it ?
