Hello,
I am currently looking for a cheap DAB+ module.
Which of the following Tesco radio would you recommend as a donor (preferably for a Venice 7 / verona module) ?
DAB 121
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-4432.aspx
DAB 109
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-3790.aspx
Pure One Mi
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.208-6060.aspx
any recommendation welcome.
Many thanks,
Jerome
I picked up a Philips AE5010 from Halfords, when it was £17.99, now gone upto £24.99 but comparable in price to the tesco units above.
The AE5010 has a Verona module inside.
There are probably cheaper units with a Verona in, but just to let people know.
Can anyone help me put a useful firmware on this ???????![]()
Use CS, SCK, SI, SO to flash the module.Code:Verona pinout in serial control mode Pin Pin 3.3V 2 1 1.2V 0V 4 3 Audio Left 0V 6 5 Audio Right CS 8 7 SCK SI 10 9 SO RESET 12 11 SPDIF 0V 14 13 - - 16 15 RX - 18 17 TX - 20 19 - 0V 22 21 - - 24 23 - - 26 25 -
Make sure RESET (pin 12) is held low so the module doesnt attempt to boot when you try to flash.

You will need the right firmware to enable the SDPIF, I havent seen any module with the SPDIF enabled though. The DAB+ tuner project from silicon chips magazine is supposed to have its SPDIF enabled.
Verona only come with standalone firmware (MASTER) so you got to use the reference design SERMMI firmware out of a Venice 7 and it should work with RR and CF just like CB's Ultimate DAB.

I dont think they have Venice 7 inside. The PURE one might have the Venice but their cheap radios tend to use just the chips from Frontier Silicon and soldered on the main PCB, very unlikely you will find a premade module inside, I could be wrong.
Technika DAB1101ST = Verona (was going for £9 in Tesco shops a few months ago, £19.95 on Tesco ebay)
Tesco DAB111V = Verona
More Tesco Verona examples, you can see from the PDF filename :

Tesco DAB111 = Venice 7
Pure Chronos CD II = Venice 7
Sony XDR-DS12iP = Venice 7
Sony CMT-FX350i = Venice 7
The new sony XDRS56 might be using V7, dont know
Like I said a few months ago, it is difficult to find a Venice 7 in cheap radios most use verona now so its probably a good idea to design a board for Verona.

Many thanks for the pinout info, worked a few of the pins out but this helps confirm the rest. Was thinking it was pin compatible with V7, obviously not!
I'm hoping to get a unit with a Venice 9 at some point, to get some proper slave functionality. Have you had any experience of the V9 yet?
Verona and V7 are not pin-pin compatible, based on the same hardware though. Havent seen V9, Ill imagine they are only seen in high end radios. It would be interesting to see whats V9 is all about but I dont think there will be alot of difference compared to a V7 in slave mode.
If V9 is cheaper than V7 then I think sony might start using them even on their cheaper portable radios, just a guess.

Hello,
I bought a second hand DAB 111 with Venice 7 module
software version = DAB-mmi-FS2027--0000-0111_v4.0.13.27373-9
and a new DAB121 for 25 GBP currently available at Tesco with Verona FS2052
software version = dab-mmi-FS2052-0000-0032_V4.1.14.EX10040-1RC1
The Verona is a lot smaller and surprisingly does not even have a RF shield.
I got better sound from the DAB121 but it is probably not related to the modules.
Now, time to check these I/O signals![]()
