    Craig:
I just googled venice 7 and found that it has spdif audio output. Since I will have tuner at dash where the antenna connector is and I have the PC in the boot I would really love spdif, preferably optical. Any plans for that?

    Bigdave,
Just thinking from my own experience with non-OEM head units, was there possibly a power feed to your antenna from the OEM head unit which may not have been run for the new Venice unit ?
A lot of the short antennas have an amp unit built-in and will not pickup any signal without it being powered.

    Hi bigdave,

When I connected my Silabs FM USB stick to my Golf Mk5's aerial connection, the reception was absolutely pants. I drilled a hole in the roof and put a Kinetic DRA-1001 http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/Kinetic...ar_aerial.html there. The difference in reception was stella.

My Golf's OEM aerial was using the rear heated window. I wonder if it's not the difference in sensitivity but the way the rear aerial needs to be powered?

My golf is a Mk4 and has the beesting antenna in the roof, this is powered at the iso connection behind the radio. I left the antenna powered and swapped out for a SMB to Aerial Connector from maplins. The reception was no better than a silabs. The sound would sort of cut out now and again. In the end I swapped the antenna to a JVC Hal antenna and that was excellent for DAB but FM was no better.

I trawled through the posts on Digital car and nrgizerbunny did have problems with FM. Thus when Craig comes along and claims his radio is as good as a headunit - I treat that as a bit of an untruth.

Dave: http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/Bosch_B...ar_aerial.html is the aerial I use and with the latest design, it works well with both DAB and FM in my car. This is why I make this comment.

    When using inbuilt antenna:

In my car there is not only a preamp, but also a diversity function. Two antennas in the windows are switched in depending on which one that has the better signal. In order for this to work it needs power. That is taken from motor antenna output of the OEM radio, so that when that radio was removed I had to connect it to another source. It cannot be left unconnected.

I think this design is very common, so you'd better make sure you have not missed connecting this wire.

Good point. You need to loop this back to the ignition on really. This is what I did. I still could not get the car's default one to work with DAB, though, hence just replacing it...

If the S/PDIF was available from the module, it could be input to a soundcard like Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX and (depending on soundcard) be transfered to PC digitally in entire path.

Should eliminate generator whining, ground issues and improve sound quality. At least if the tuner module was not powered from USB, but from 12V battery.

Best would obviously be if the S/PDIF was converted to USB connector already in the tuner module!

    No plans for this?

The Venice 5 / 5.1 had this as well and users on Digital Car struggled to get it working correctly. I will look into it, though.
