Wireless support might yield more testers

GafBlizzard: I've been sulking in the mp3car forums for years now. I just registered just to say thank you for doing this. I own multiple BT remotes/keyboards, gamepads, IR remotes, and the works, and can truly say nothing would solve my all-in-one need more than an Xbox 360 gamepad w/chatpad. I feel this post, though it has gotten exposure in other forums, will really take-off ith the HTPC world as well. I use 7MC on my HTPC and with a couple hacks I launch Youtbe via Boxee, Hulu, and PC and EMU games, amongst many other apps. I have to use a keyboard for searching, mouse for navigation, remote for normal channel surfing, and gamepad for gameplay. I bought a RII mini BT remote/keyboard and that solved half of it but nowyour hack lets me and the entire world use one controller to do it all. Launch/play games, search Youtube via Boxee, cruise internet from couch, etc. Also, I use IntelliRemote to create remote control profiles to control all these apps and it is nearly impossible to make a remote simulate a mouse with flash based programs like Zinio Reader, Adobe Digital Editons, or Calibre. I use these to read eBooks and magazines from couch on my 60" TV. I find joytick mouse movements easier than touchpad i use. Also, Xbox 360 gamepad has so many docks and accessories for it that no other keyboard/remote does and you can find them cheap. I got a dual charging dock for $15. Show me a Logitech or whatever that has all that. Dont mean to clutter this post with a long thank you post, but just felt this one deserved it and i really think this is a under-rated achievement in the HTPC or Carputer world. Plus the price of xbox controller, chatpad, and accessories beats everything, espeically if you find 1 used or on sale.

But to my origianl point, myself and friends would love to show you some support and test things but we all have WIRELESS controllers. Doesnt do you much good now, but at least maybe of some comfort to know once you get wireless support going, you may have many more testers. Again thank you for tackling this project as well as all that helped. And dontaing it all to charity was a really gentleman gesture.

I have e-mailed the donors and asked for their opinion on recent developments. This is great stuff! Hopefully they will be posting here soon. The current pot is at $665.00 USD. Heather has briefed me on the contest and I am now the mp3car point of contact as we get closer to a finish.

    Hi Fiberoptic,

I'm a donor and agree that GAFBlizzard is the prize winner. I agree with all of his proposals for the prize money and am especially interested in the proposed wireless controller development which I believe will be the ultimate breakthrough.

    Cheers,
    CrazyIvan

P.S. Would it be possible to take a poll as to whether folks were interested in the wireless or wired versions (or both)? I'm curious as to which device most folks were actually interested in seeing a driver for. It was an oversight of the contest that we didn't specify the controller type but that in no way takes away from GAFBlizzards excellent work. Great job GAFBlizzard!!

What was the bluescreen (bscode) stop code? 0x???????

Without this code, we wont ever find out.

Mine is a black one with German key layout.

    Serial is X853685-001

The serial number of the Controller starts with X81 . The rest is not readable anymore. It is a very old standard Xbox 360 Controller.

The Chatpad is working great so far, using the Windows 7 64 Bit driver.

Hoo boy, lots of replies today! I also added another (less important) issue to the issue tracker. I'm going to try to keep making posts until I get replies to everyone. Thanks to all the testers helping with bugs, and sorry about problems cropping up. I understand the concern about awarding the prize when people are still having problems. Hopefully we can get them fixed soon. I finally got the WinDDK installed on my laptop so I can do some builds at home, but I should be back to my normal residence in a few days anyway.

I'll just start by saying to supporrer, I think you may be exactly correct about the initialization sequence. Basically it reads two bytes, then sets two bytes, then tries to read the same bytes back. The guy who did the Mac driver, and I think some of our original XBox USB captures, used 0x01 0x00 as the sequence if I recall correctly (I may even have this as a comment in my chatpad_control_code.cpp file). I was considering an option to "scan" and try different sequences, seeing which one responds properly. I hope that the three weird commands that always fail aren't different between controllers but that could be the case. I suppose we should start gathering the exact model numbers for 360 controllers and chatpads when people find problems with them, so we can try to pin down if it's some initialization code. I did see the comments the guy (Andy Kirkham?) said about not wanting to reverse engineer protocols, and I believe I sent him an email a while back since I didn't see any problem with my controller, no special handshaking needed. Let's hope we can fix it.

Supporer, I was hoping the issue was that you had an XBox controller, but I see it's "For Windows". When you get that 121 error, does the controller program sit there for 10 seconds first? It's a timeout error, but I don't see any way it could happen unless there's a 10-second delay first (in addition to the 5-second startup delay for the control utility, which can be skipped with the --nodelay option).

I'm really sorry about the blue screen. I hate that happening and I was hoping I'd fixed most of them. Eventually I should probably try to get everything working with Driver Verifier, though I don't know if that will help.

For now, can you run eventvwr.msc and try to find the bluescreen if you do not know the code? I'm not sure whether it would show up in System or Application or what. Otherwise, you might have a file in C:\Windows\Minidump. Either of those can give us information about the crash codes, which can tell us what sort of problem happened.

I have the X814365-001, I've had it since I first bought my XBox on Black Friday of 2007.

One big problem I notice is that, when running these drivers, the headset port is no longer working (the device doesn't even show up anymore in Skype after a reboot)...

Yeah, I know, I should buy a new headset that plugs into my computer, but for me it's just easier to deal with a headset plugged into my xbox controller...

When i run the control program for the first time, with the --nodelay option - it takes more then 5sec till it exits with IOCTL fault 121.

Then after running it again, without pulling the controller out ..

    Code:
    C:\chatpad03a>chatpad_control_amd64.exe --nodelay

    *****
Chatpad control utility version 0.1a started.
    *****
Control utility started with no delay.

Microsoft initialization has been finished, so we can init the chatpad now.

Done. The exit status is -1.
Aidan91: that device serial cant even be found with google, there might be another chip in that pad as well (since the chips are branded with this serial as well, i know from a ps3 thread)
does the program work with your device?
