I'm running windows XP on an Alienware Area-51 m7700 (not sure if what I'm using makes a difference) and I can't get the chatpad installer to work. I keep getting an error message, i'll try attaching a screen shot of it.

Again I'm not sure if my system has anything to do with it so I included my system properties in the screen shot. After I ok this message I get one saying that the installer is complete, but it obvisouly doesn't work still.

Hmm. A lot of people have been getting that error lately. I think with one guy we managed to manually fix it, but in general I think that message means that the installer cannot find the device it is looking for. Is your controller an official wired 360 controller, or a "Made for Windows" controller? A couple of people who have reported the same problem have had some special controller, like a "Call of Duty" branded one (or something like that), or a Madcatz one. It could be that such special controllers show up differently in Windows and my installer doesn't find the devices properly.

I am currently using a wireless Xbox 360 controller on my HTPC using the wireless adapter to play games (Fallout New Vegas) and the chat pad would be an awesome addition to be able to use hotkeys for certain mods without needing a full keyboard.

I also think starting another reward for the chat pad driver for wireless receiver is a good idea and I'm willing to pitch in a few dollars.

Thanks for any answers anyone has and the awesome idea of offering a reward for what should be available from MS already.
Unfortunately, I am pretty sure that the charge and play kit works like a normal wireless controller. The cable is just used for power I think, so it will NOT work with the chatpad driver until wireless support is added. Sorry.

GAFBlizzard, here's to a site for a guy who has developed the drivers for OSX, he also has the wired chatpad working. I have OSX and have ordered a chatpad and I'll post here as soon as it arrives if it works in OSX with the wireless gaming receiver. Maybe he can offer some advice or accelerate the process with what he's learned creating his driver.

Thanks again for the good work and like I said above I'm willing to pitch a few dollars to help with a new wireless driver contest, and another donation to charity would be great.
Thanks for the link, but funny story about that site...that was one of the first sites that we looked to when we were trying to figure out how the chatpad worked, I believe. The guy got the chatpad working on the Mac (for one style of controller), did not ever release the source code for that particular version, and then...vanished off of the face of the earth despite everyone trying to contact him. I seem to recall in the original research thread we got some USB logs from people trying that driver, however.

I even bought a used Mac to try to learn from that driver and USB sniffing, but I don't think I ever really ended up using it. I am not positive, but I almost think someone tried wireless with it and it does not work with those drivers. Let me know though, I could be wrong. Or wireless might work but the chatpad does not, something like that.

Any idea how long till it gets signed? Its very annoying having to do the f8 thing each time...

Also, mine bluescreened on me the other day - is that the crash that occurs when the controllers unplugged?

Cheers, keep up the great work I cant wait to see a beta/full release!
Sorry, I do not have a definite timeframe. If you have Windows Vista/7 "business" or "pro", I think there is a workaround I can try to find you. Otherwise, the only workaround I know of is the Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider, but that's a third-party utility and I don't have the source code to it, so I can't vouch for it. I think some people use it with no problems, but use at your own risk, as with anything on the internets.

I think PPjoy 0.8.4.6 installer can open testing mode for any version of Win 7 x64, but some anti virus will report it as an virus

Drivers work great, I especially like the ability to switch between mouse and joystick. I do have one issue though, when I finish using the controller I Ctrl-C the command prompt windows to close it and wait a few minutes but I still get a blue screen stop error followed by a reboot. Do I need to be in joypad mode before I close the window? Is there any way to have the required program run in the system tray as an application instead of the command prompt window? Thanks again for the great work!

    Hello everyone,

Firstly, congrats to GAFblizzard for creating the first working PC chatpad drivers. Unfortunately, i only use a wireless controller, so i'm still waiting for that, but i wholeheartedly respect the hard work you've put into this (and everyone else involved).

I purchased one of these modded trackball xbox controllers recently, which arrived yesterday & i've been loving it so far. I thought some of you guys might be into it too.

I managed to get his last Wireless model, but i figured those of you using using wired controllers with a chatpad would appreciate one of the wired models.

And no, i don't make them - i just wanted to help him get a bit of recognition for addressing something that i've been after for some time now. Much like GAF did with the chatpad driver.

Good luck on the wireless driver! And keep up the great work.

    P.S - sorry for the extra-long link :s

I still need to try to reproduce this. You should not have to be in joypad mode, but you could see if doing that gets rid of the crash. What OS and what exact install/control binary did you use for your system?

In theory the application could run in a system tray, but because it's not finished, I like having the command prompt window for debug output. Trying to help people figure out what's wrong with a system tray app would be a nightmare right now, but the command prompt gives me easy clues. :P

Again, I am sorry for everyone who is waiting on wireless drivers. I have been busy with work and various other things going on right now, but I am hoping I can take a little time to make some slight progress this weekend related to the chatpad.

Quick update for tonight. As part of my to-do list, I tested unplugging and replugging the controller tonight. No matter whether I have the control utility running or not, I did not get any bluescreen crashes on Windows 7 64-bit home premium. It could be that I fixed the bug and just haven't released the code to everyone yet. :/ It should be in the next release if so.

If anyone DOES have the unplugging crash on Windows 7 64-bit home premium, let me know, since that hopefully means it's fixed. XD
