I have some updates. I have had a crazy year working on other higher priority projects. I might have some more time to renew interest in this as I have the framework built and a new system to get prototypes up and running.

Stay tuned. Still nobody has anything like it on the market which is both astonishing and sad.

Yup, you should make this a relatively high priority I would say...

If possible it should also be as generic as possible so it will work right out of the box with Windows or Linux machines. Would be great if it was recognized by the newer androids devices as an external sound device but I don't know if the androids can support that. I should plug one of my USB sound cards into my Galaxy SIII and see if they are recognized... Hmmm...

I am following the USB Audio standard. This means it will work out of the box with Linux and Windows. It is hit or miss with OSX because they decided they are above the standard and I am not making it work with OSX just to make it incompatible with Windows and Linux.

I have an SIII, and I haven't tried USB Audio. I don't even know if it is supported. But yes, my intentions were to after releasing something that works with a wire, make a version that supports bluetooth audio. The sound quality will be lower obviously because bluetooth can't handle the bitrate, but that should make tablet/phone installs much easier.

If you have the adapter the SIII just recognizes things.. I already verified you can plug in flash cards, hard drives, mouses and keyboards. There is not much power however so it will tell you if the device is asking for too much power and not allow it to connect.

I have a generic tablet here as well that even came with the adapter included but I haven't done much with it.

    Status Update April 08th, 2013:

I have working hardware that will output low-level 8 channel, 24bit, 96KHz sound. So that is 7.1 audio using Windows sound outputs at better sound quality than most sound cards. Now I can (hopefully) bolt on my amplifier and voila!

It turns out that the particular model (http://tabletrepublic.com/forum/late...view-3203.html) that I am interested in is not available in Hong Kong. So I will need to find a reliable mail order source in China to get it. I will keep you posted.

On Audio over USB I have a Sony Xperia Z (4.1.2) which supports my Fiio USB D/A without issue, but my other phone, Samsung Note (stock 4.1.2) will not. So it all depends on the kernel. I hope the x7 would have this function (fingers crossed)

Do you know if it will work with Linux at all?

Yes. It will work with OSX and Linux. I actually had to make the tough decision to back away from USB Audio 1.0 and 1.1 and move into 2.0. It is the newer standard, not many people are doing it, but it gives better control over the lines, a faster bit transfer rate and speed for more resolution, higher frequency output, and lots of other things. So Linux and OSX support it natively, Windows needs a driver because Microsoft has decided nobody needs that sort of sound from a PC and just doesn't bundle it with the OS. Android and iOS also support it.

But to get the sound and channels I wanted, it had to be done.

The better news, is that since my last amplifier design, the silicon company released a new product that seems to have addressed the issue I was having. So I am going to re-layout that board and see what's what.
