I'm not sure I'd have the time to build up and sell kits, but it would be a purely open hardware design so anyone could build and modify it. It's basically the same type of high efficiency class AB amp in most head units.
There are plans for a smaller, lower cost version. But I don't do small then work up. I do the best thing I could possibly think of, that nobody else has even come close to doing, then if there is time make a smaller less feature packed version for those that don't want the uber version.

My tiny amp would be a Class D like this one.

It will be Class D if I design it.

AB has its place, but in today's systems there is no advantage anymore. The silicon and designs used in the FETs of today are so far superior to what they once were that the turn on times are essentially instant and the power drive phenomenal. The only legit reason for a Class A, Class B, or Class AB amp today is nostalgia. But that is a valid reason. Same reason I keep my old game consoles alive and working even though I have all the ROMs and emulators.

I'm not sure the efficiency argument works in the 'CarPC' universe. As long as you get the heat out and the amp performs reasonably well, it's fine - we're only talking about 100W total. The TDA7802 is a new product and SB-I class which is the highest AB before D. The delta isn't much. And it's difficult to find all-in-one class D's for head unit use (no boost supply & stop/start) that have I2S inputs and are not costly. A small amp could be built that is literally a BFI, BFC, amp, I2S/USB bridge chip, a small PLD, a few decoupling caps and literally not much else beside a milled aluminum box to put it all in. I'm always traveling for work, but I will try to eek out a design over the next couple weeks (out of country all next week).

I am intrigued by your larger amp design. I'm assuming you work for an amp company. Tuning the output filters is where the most work will be. It's easy to put together a PWM driver, H Bridge, and LC filter and have it be very efficient. It's hard to make it sound great! Will you be sharing any part of the design?

    Good luck.

eeguru, if you have a design you would like to build maybe you should start your own thread instead of hijacking Toasters thread...

No problem having more than one design but you shouldn't be advertising your own potential attempt in another developers thread.

    Just saying...

I wasn't suggesting my own design. I was suggesting maybe doing a project with a smaller scope would help get to the finish line - along with my help. You are right though, I should have posted my own thread with the exact same name. For some reason I thought a 3 year long thread was enough time before suggesting an alternative here.
