My new FPGA development board arrived and I am writing the necessary HDL for the interface. This should help move this project along!

Well almost 23 hours of straight HDL programming, and I have a simulation model that works as far as I can tell so far. Still need to tweak it and make a proper testbench for it, but right now 166.67 microseconds (0.00016667 seconds) of audio is simulating being played

I'm curious what FPGA and DAC are you guys using? and are you using the FPGA for the usb communication or a ucontroller?

Right now it is a singular project. Tim is working on some interesting hardware of his own at the moment too.

I have had problems on this board by sharing too much information about part numbers and compatibility. Theft and such. So I am taking the more cautious route on this design since it is only one of two of its kind in the world.

I think it is safe to say however the FPGA is better than a Xilinx Spartan3, and inferior to a Vertex6.

understandable, i only asked because i worked on that IDE before when i was working on the spartan4 a couple years ago. the DAC though, is it a high end one?

The program shown is Modelsim, and lots of FPGA companies use it since it works well and is relatively cheap to license.

There is no DAC, which makes this unit very high end. No lossy conversions, straight audio output in digital glory. ClassD amplifiers use OWN, which is what i am doing. I am using a standalone processing chip that runs in the tens of gigahertz to produce such quality.

i'd be in if it comes out relatively soon - right now i'm looking for an optical solution, but seems like everything is discontinued or you need multiple amps - the 5.1 off usb would be sweet.

another thing would be form factor (at least for me - using a laptop)...

Also - will it need a regulated supply (again - laptop, so no dedicated ps)

another option - have upgradeable firmware (if you put out a new rev), just download the new bit file to the unit

I would not expect it to be out before next year.

No regulated supply needed, it will regulate its own since it requires a very very clean signal to come from a horribly noisy environment. Also it will only be 4.1, not 5.1.

Its good to see you working on it 2k1, and good that you have given a reasonable time frame, we would rather it be a long time coming than come out half baked! :P
