Passport QI45 Audio Output (or any radar detector)

Last week I got the QI45 radar detector by passport. It's one of the discrete permanent-installed radar detectors. It's awesome and it's been working great. But there's one big problem: I play my music too loud and I can't hear it. I have to keep looking at the thing's screen and taking my eyes off the road.

The solution was obvious: play it through the car's speakers. How to accomplish it was not immediately obvious. Then my friend called me asking for help installing a subwoofer in his car without changing the stock speakers. I said "oh you just need a line output converter." That triggered me to remember my desire for external speakers for the QI45. This will work on any radar detector with a built-in speaker though.

    What do you need?
    -A soldering iron
    -Solder
-A short length of speaker wire (maybe)
    -Tape
    -A line output converter
    I used: http://www.amazon.com/Scosche-2-Chan...8192124&sr=1-1

Now it's painfully simple if you don't mind opening up an expensive product and soldering.

    Pictures:

    Step 0: Before installing

    Step 1: Open it up.

Step 2: Solder a short length of speaker wire to the speaker's terminals

Step 3: Find a way to get the wire out of the closed box

Step 4: Attach it to the line driver
Note: Since the radar detector has a single speaker and I wanted to hear it out of both channels in the car, I just attached it to both of the line converter's speaker inputs

    Step 5: Attach RCA cables!

    Step 6:
I then routed the rca cable to the back of the car and attached it to the car pc's microphone input and turned the microphone volume up in windows xp's volume manager. Boom. Everything works. Easy mod.

Next I'd like to write a small program to check the volume of the microphone port and do something when the volume goes above x percent so I can perform an action when radar is in use.

    Very cool!

For an action, may I suggest some chaff dispensers?
