DLL writes the current station graphic to a file specific to the station, in this way adding Slideshow code is very simple. This new board will work with the old app and DLL but of course no Slideshow.

JP has also added the 'EQ preset' and 'BBE' sound setups to the DLL.
The presets don't seem to match the names, but the BBE is interesting.

These features work on the original board as well.

Yes I played with them initially, they have been improved and I am going to revisit them, in my case I run external DSP so I don't need them, this is why I haven't added them in my app, although I think most people are using FE plugins so what I do with my app does not really make a difference to the take-up of this great module. I will admit they made a real difference with headphones plugged into the module.

Cool. Sounds nice and simple - a little primitive if anything but if it gets the job done no problem. How are you installing these in a car environment given the development board is just that? Is there a casing or other board?

Not quite sure what part of it is primitive compared to other Modules (asked nicely, not having a go at that description), it is a complete plug in module, just needs a case or it can be mounted inside the CAR-PC case.

EDIT Development I think refers to roll your own software interface app and mounting hardware.

In the days of .NET and object oriented programming, calling a DLL function and having it drop an image file somewhere in the file system to later load by the application is a bit clunky (that's what I meant by primitive specifically) if you ask me. Sure it works and it is still better than say the RTL2832 dongles and the rubbish "SDK" that comes with them since they don't expose a lot of this.

Also I still don't quite get line out that this and other modules use. Seems a bit roundabout but I understand it cuts out the need to decode. Again I feel is clunky. Makes recording (legal issues aside) for rewinding/pausing etc more difficult since you then have to sample/record/encode over and above just allowing the line in to pass through to line out. Again, nothing better but doesn't mean this is the right way.

Finally with respect to "Development", is that the long term goal here for these companies? We buy development boards and then mount them in our solution somehow? Or the modules themselves without the dev board. Again every car PC is different so there's no universal form factor but a product rather than a demo/dev board would be nice.

I don't want to sound so critical but just my thoughts and I acknowledge this is probably the best current car PC solution available.

Edit: And for $100 odd I'll almost definitely buy one still

Hi Christian, now were on the same page. The DLL code for Slide show and EPG are still under development, so this may change in the final release. As I said, I was lucky enough to have access to a prototype and the beta unfinished DLL.

I guess we could argue all day, as others have on various forums, about the logistics and business decisions facing small developers bringing something like this to the market. As with other features I guess it comes down to a decision on what people will use within the design and HW cost.

I see your point about a product and once again I guess it depends on where you look at this from, for me, this is a product and was exactly what I was looking for to integrate into my Vehicle system. I definitely agree with your thoughts on Line out, it also make keeping noise out of the system a bit more of a chore. But overall I too think this is currently the best solution for a lot of us.

Yes the price is pretty good for such a beautifully built PCB. BTW, the first edition of the unit was a lot less that $100, reason why I was so happy to grab one and run with it.

Updated the first post of this thread.

Resized the Slideshow image to correct dimensions as shown in the following screen grabs. Depending on the station, I'm currently getting an update image every 3 to 5 seconds.

Could definately use the I2S port and use HID instead of serial emulation. Change the PIC and drop the analog audio section altogether. This is exactly what I have on my V7 DAB radio. I might make one for this module once I get hold of it (when I get the time)
