    XMDirect Problem

I am having some problems with my XMDirect unit. I cannot get any data from it! Let me list out what I have here:

1.5GHz laptop with no serial ports
USB serial converter on COM5 (100% sure of the port#)
Custom made cable to go to the XMDirect unit
    7812 +12vdc regulator wired to pins 6,7 and 8
I tested each pin (6,7,8) with a voltage meter and they all read correct polarity on the right pins, at +11.86v.
XMDirect antenna connected and going out the window, and sitting on the top of the fence outside. The weather is rainy.
XMDirect has not been activated yet either...

I entered COM5 into frodoplayers XM area. When I run XM in frodo, the led on the USB/Serial converter flashes signifying data out from the computer. NOTHING loads in this screen. So I completely exit frodo, then run the Indigo program as mentioned earlier in this thread. I do not receive anything on COM5, even after cycling power (tried many times). So I figured it was the cable. I took the cable off of the XMDirect, and used a screwdriver to short pins 1 and 2. I then transmitted data from Indigo, and the text showed back up - so my cable is fine. I tested the proper pin numbering with the meter and all is 100% fine.

I still have NOTHING loading in frodo!!!!! It's like the XMDirect unit is not doing anything. Are there any points in the circuitry I can test to see if its even functioning? I tried it on another machine with a hardwired serial port with the same results (nothing works). I am pretty darn experianced at electronics, but this one boggles me! I do not know where to go with this.... Help please! -Brett W

I would take the XMD apart and make sure you are getting connection to the circuit board. Maybe the pins are a little too short to make a good connection?

Wow thanks for the fast response! I just used the meter, and I tested between the pins on the serial connector that plugs into the computer and the pins on the PCB, and all 3 have continuity (spelling?). I believe these were the pins you were referring to. Any other ideas?? I am going skiing tomorrow morning, and it would be AWESOME to have this on the 3 hr drive.

so the serial cable is shielded? and you have grounded the shield? and the only other thing I would try is to swap pins 2 and 3 on the serial just to make sure that TX and RX are correct. and also dont ground the 12v power supply ground to the serial ground

I know you said that when you shorted out the Rx and Tx pins and tested data transfer with success, but i would double check the cables connections. I had the same exact problem but i had only taped up all of the connections. When i checked the pins with the ohm meter they had all showed continuity and the 12v lines were showing the correct voltage. But as soon as I took it apart and soldered the connections up it worked great. Sorry I am just repeating what you already said you tested, it just worked for me.

Yes, the serial cable is in fact sheilded. I tried using a piece of 24ga wire, and holding it to the sheild on the USB adapter and the sheild on the XMD connector. It didnt have any effect on it. I also tried reversing the data lines.

I am unsure exactly how FrodoPlayer works with XM, so it makes it hard. How long should it take for me to get anything other than the blank screens in FrodoXM? Also, can I test this out without the antenna? If not, how long should I leave the antenna outside to get a lock before I call it quits? Thanks!

I forgot i had trouble with that as well, had to solder up the bare sheild wires to get continuity from the outside of the DIN cabel to the Serial's outside

EDIT : sorry you type faster then I

alti: thanks for the idea, but I did solder all of the connections in the cable... I used an old MAC cable, and a serial extension cable, both with molded connectors. I then connected those two in the middle by soldering the three wires together.

Anything else? It has to be something I missed somewhere..

it usualy takes about 10 to 15 secs before frodo sees anything, and you should at least get the blue signal bars to show you are at least getting something from the XMD. While you have the XMD open, give power to the XMD and start frodoplayer, then on the big metal can inside the XMD check pin#10 for 5 volts, should tell you if it's getting power.

I know it's silly but just have to check, you are putting 12v to pins 6 and 7 and you are grounding 8 right?
