u smart or an EE? i have a problem

    Vehicle: 2004 Acura TL

Solution: The ability to input OEM display information to aftermarket touchscreen

Reason: Replace OEM LCD with aftermarket touchscreen in OEM location to retain OEM look, line of sight, and achieve a stealth installation.

OEM display: Outputs HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, AC) as well as audio system information (No touchscreen functionality). I can provide schematics and wiring diagrams if necessary.

Aftermarket display: Xenarc 7" TSV LCD touchscreen

Demand for Touchscreen: Input for car computer while also serving as a replacement for OEM display capabilities.

Requirements: Replication of OEM display must not be dependant on user's car computer.

moahdib's project is in his 04 TL. This is the same car I have to give you an idea of the interior. He, however, relocated his OEM LCD. I do not want to go this route.

you would have to find something to either read the data being sent to the lcd controller or the display like a pic chip and program this to display the data as either vga or video, you could then send this to the touchscreen via some sort of switch to change between the oem and the pc display. it would be simpler, i would have thought, to install a smaller touchscreen with a small lcd also and break out the lines of the oem display to be displayed as functions are used. you could have both at the same time then. another way would be to see what you can extract from your cars ecu, i worked on a merc which had a speed/volume control for the stereo and the info from the head unit could be hacked from the dig port, you could just interface to this but you would need an embedded controller for it to work without the pc on..

or.. how about spliting your oem lcd with a new controller to display the car info on a third of the screen, set the pc up on the other 2 thirds and just get a touchscreen overlay for it. no flash graphics though!

The easiest way would be to interface everything to your pc, and then to your monitor... but as you don't want to need your pc for those funtions to eh.. function, you'll have to build a small 'computer' (at least a microprocessor will be needed) that outputs vga or composite signals with the information in a readable format...
This leaves no option for skinning and will be very difficult to make, leave alone look good ...
The problem lies that your typical character LCD (which your oem screen is, only with some icons added) takes some sort of serial or parallel input of data, not a video-signal of any kind, so it cannot just be 'converted' and switched...

How in the world could I possibly split the screen in this way? I have never seen anything like this before with a pc and have no idea what kind of hardware could do this....remember, the display should not be dependant on the computer.

I have imagined some sort of microcontroller performing this job, but do not have the expertise in this area...ugh

Yeah, unfortunately, I don't know how I'd go about recreating the images/icons/graphics, but this is not a huge issue. It could always be improved upon at a later date. My main concern is functionality right now.
