OEM GPS Modules.

While WAAS is US based, there is a system for us Europeans- DGPS differential GPS.

There are two ways of using DGPS..either software correction or straight from a device. Software correction takes a correction signal from a DGPS device, and combines it with a NMEA string to calculate the location. Hardware based correction can be achieved by Garmin.

Garmin do the
GPS 35 which is DGPS ready, i.e. plug a DGPS receiver box into the end of the GPS 35.

For GPS newbies, SA (Selective availibility has been turned off for a few years now) so DGPS is a bit of over kill for car satnav

I now hate you all, I was going to just go the gps usb mouse route like a lot of people do, but now I think I will have to get myself one of these and see what upgrades I can do to it...

Yeah I have always wanted to go the OEM route, now I will have 2 sat antennas on my car. now I just need to add sirius and directv

well Looks like I will be placing an order for one of these things. I've already started work on a daughterboard for it I'm making so I can interface this thing with my aprs radio and compute via serial & USB

Cudos to everyone willing to go this route. I really think its a great mod and really small and so easy to use. I'll have pictures comming up soon, I just need to get my roomates cam and put em' on the web I'll try and post em' tonight.

Again if you guys are doing this and need to test to see if you actually got a signal, you can do 2 things:

1) use windows hyperterminal
2) use the delou gps tool I gave a link to in the begenning of this thread.

FOr those of you who nLited thier XP installs, you will probably have to download the delou tool becuse you most likely took out windows hyperterminal.

THe GPS tool is better than hyperterminal, because it actually reads the NMEA 1.83 data and puts it into a somewhat readable form, (it shows you how many sats its tracking, location, MPH (if any) and altitude from sea level)

Hyperterminal would just spew out whatever it sees comming from the COM port also it wont auto detect your gps like the diag tool will.

I'd definatly love to see a OEM gps install thread, it's importance can have a great value to our comminity.

For everyone that doesn't know these GPS mods are 1/5 the size of a standard USB/Serial GPS mouse.... Yet they are just as if not more capable than the USB gps mouse... ALSO the greatest values for you nlite poeple is that you do NOT need a driver !!!!!! just point your mapping software to whatever com port the OEM mod is on and it will get the NMEA data...
