    you have a few options,
fist, how are you going to power it? an inverter? or a incar laptop charger?

you could just put a switch on those, and set your laptops bios to boot on power resume.

you could also set to power on keyboard so when you press a key it poweres up, or just open it up and solder wires onto the switch contacts and put a momentory switch somewhere that you can get to it.

What you really need to do is for 'remote laptop'

laptops very rarely have the boot on power resume as they don't suffer from power cuts thus it is ommitted from the BIOS. What you really want is an anutomatic system. There is a very nice thread about it somewhere using a realy hooked up to the power button. Search and ye will find.

I won't be able to try it till next week when I get my docking station, but I'm going to try it with a 4n25 optoisolator. Basically a photransistor and led in one package. So you can connect the two circuits without electically coupling them. You apply 5ma to the led side and it allows current to flow through the transistor on the other. They are pretty cheap (~25c) and I'll "press it" by using a 555 monostable.

Still need to work out a thing or two, but I'll post how it turns out.

My carputer laptop has a busted screen, and is installed permanently, so i opened up the case and soldered some wires to the power button. The wires are connected to a relay that automatically starts it when I start the car. I also have them connected to an oem switch it the dash, so I have an override.
