Let me preface this: I know next to nothing about the nitty gritty of hardware
I have an old laptop shell with a 7.5x9.75" lcd screen (including the edge underneath the bezel), and a visor that has 5x13" of surface are to fit a screen in. I want a screen that will fit that area as closely as possible; 5x9.75 would be great.
What I want to do with it: carputer running linux. Can display size be altered with a little programming depending on the situation (i.e. when in bash, it would cut the top off and display in "wide" (9") mode, etc.
Is it possible: To cut 2.5" off the top of the screen I have? Has anyone done anything like this? I'm a very diy kinda guy, patient, and resourceful. And poor. I really don't want a Lilliput or something similar; I want to fill as much of that surface area as possible.
Thanks,
TravisD

When you say 'cut off' you don't mean physically cut off do you?
Well, before I get into even thinking about that, I need to figure out if I can cut (not virtually, but physically, with sharp edged tools and etc.) 2.5" off the top of that old lcd screen and get it to function.
The answer is NO.
You will completely destroy it. Even if there were no matrix connextions on that vertex, you would still delaminate the LCD structure in cutting it.

You could get round some problems by recessing the screen back an inch or two to allow you to partially cover parts with things like aircon buttons if they are shallow enough. Then you can create a skin with black areas where the screen is covered.
Code:||------/ || || || || ||------\ || | | || | | LCD^ ^aircon
Bump for an old post. I accidently opened this thread when I meant to click on another one, but this article seems to be doing what you are asking about:
