    Question Popup LCD

    All

Sorry I don't know what the name of it is..

I want to mount my 7" LCD under the dash and have it pop up out of the dash. I'm sure I can use a motor or Hydraulics to pop it up but I have no idea what to search for... and/or a few links to sites.. I'm sure I'm going to have to make some mods to equip it.

Thanks and sorry for the n00b question

Motorized pop up screen. If you have a more custom install in mind, search on terms "motorized" or "actuator".

My install has a home made motorized screen using a servo and servo controller board. Click on my sig to see the details.

Sorry not to be more clear.

I did see the slide out and up..

But I am truely looking for it to Pop(slide) up from the top of the dashboard itself. I want to cut a hole just large enough for the screen and the mech device to pop up. I'm thinking of putting the access panel on a pivot so it will auto open when the screen comes up.

Getting warmer I did happen to run across that as well but I'm just looking for something that comes up thru the dash.

You want a "linear actuator". Search on that term.

bugbyte...that motorized monitor is awesome. Very nice work. How well is the servo working for you? I used servos years ago to move light weight panels. But nothing as heavy as a monitor. I need to motorize a 10" monitor and am looking for something simular to a servo...I want to make is swing up and be quiet. I want to stay away from an actuator. Also is the servo controller you used readily available?

www.selectproducts.com has a good range of actuators. I would use them for ideas and then shop around. You should be able to find a better price elsewhere.

Thanks! I really didn't think the design would last but it works great and it's silent. The trick was to get a sail winch servo with massive torque.

Controlling the servo has been a challenge. The servo controller I have works great but there are two problems. First, the Epia boards send out a "pulse" upon startup on the serial line and that confuses the board. I had to put a delay timer on it to start up 10 seconds after the ignition was switched on. That fixed it.

The second problem is that the controller board receives its instructions from the computer. The Epia is underpowered and that sometimes means that the servo moves VERY SLOWLY (it moves the servo from position 16 to 251 by ones)

To combat problems 1 and 2, I am currently working on a BASIC STAMP II circuit to allow me to open and close the monitor by pressing a button on the dash. I'll also hook it up to the computer so I can signal it to open/close. There's nothing cooler than demo-ing the system to someone and saying "open screen".

There is actually a third problem that I think can be eliminated but I haven't gotten around to it. When power is switched on to the servo, it "jerks" slightly. I've been told you can calibrate a servo to prevent that but I haven't tried it out.
