LEDs for 3rd Brake Light

Idea: Convert ugly third brakelight to LED while also reducing rattles.

How: Remove third brakelight. Get LEDs. Run wires. Done. (That's the idea atleast)

Parts: I used 10mm 5000mcd LEDs I got from Ebay.
Code:
Product Description
* Emitted Color : ULTRA RED
* Size (mm) : 10mm
* Lens Color : Water Clear
* Peak Wave Length (nm) : 640 ~ 645
* Forward Voltage (V) : 1.8 ~ 2.2
* Reverse Current (uA) : <=30
* Luminous Intensity Typ Iv (mcd) : Average in 5000
* Life Rating : 100,000 Hours
* Viewing Angle : 20 ~ 25 Degree

Absolute Maximum Ratings (Ta=25°C)
* Max Power Dissipation : 80mw
* Max Continuous Forward Current : 30mA
* Max Peak Forward Current : 75mA
* Reverse Voltage : 5~6V
* Lead Soldering Temperature : 240°C (<5Sec)
* Operating Temperature Range : -25°C ~ +85°C
* Preservative Temperature Range : -30°C ~ +100°C
Before:

The LEDs:

Sodered:

After:

Problems: Need to be lined up perfectly. Need a case.
Want to use the material these guys used on the bottom for the diffuser:

[Edit]:
This is a great LED calculator.
Shave LEDs

Current Status 1
Current Status 2
Current Status 3

The 10mm 5000mcd LEDs are NOT bright enough unless they are looked directory on.
Use 10000mcd s-flux LEDs.

He had one acution for $12 with like $7 shipping and one for $15 shipped. You can figure out which one I got.

I think I'm going to be overvolting these LEDs a bit. Instead of giving them 2.2v, I'm probably going to be giving them 3v. Anyone want to advice agains this?
