My HQCT does keep all its settings, what I mean is that I can't mute it or adjust the volume until Windows is loaded which takes about 30 seconds or more. It's not like a headunit where you have immediate control of volume at power on, so if you want quiet when you start the car in the morning you're out of luck. My soundcard has output the second it recieves power so the radio plays while the machine is still booting. So I need a way to either control volume on the HQCT without windows, or make it be quiet until windows is loaded.

One nice feature I had with my Blaupunkt HU was you could set the start-up volume seperately.

The unit keeps it's last settings...

What you need is some software to set the shutdown volume when you shutdown your pc.

OK, so mute the radio before shutting down. I don't see how you expect to control a usb-controlled device before a usb host is connected to it. I'm not familiar with Windows, but I know you can easily run programs automagically on shutdown in Linux.

I don't expect to have direct control of it without USB, but that's exactly the problem. I also don't want to have to manually lower the volume every time before I turn the car off, the whole idea of an integrated system is automation, everything should start up and shutdown gracefully without user intervention.

The best thing I think would be an option in the HQCT software that programs the HQCT to power on at a reduced volume, independent of the primary volume setting. The idea being that the HQCT would power up at the reduced level, but as soon as windows loads and the HQCT software is loaded it would return to whatever was set in the software. I don't know if the hardware even allows such a setting though.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe an AutoIT script or something to send a command to the software at shutdown. Over my head at the moment, I may mess with it when I have more time.

Unfortunately, that functionality would have to be implemented in the HQCT firmware. I'm surprised Windows will not let you execute a binary upon shutdown. It sounds like it should be a straight-forward procedure. Anything in msconfig ?

I don't listen to radio directly through the line-in line. Because I use SPDIF out, I have to use winamp with its linein plugin to redirect the radio back through the wave line. That means that I don't hear radio until winamp starts. It also has the side-effect of including a delay or 2 or 3 seconds for the digital encoding of the audio, which isn't too much of concern after you get used to waiting a couple of seconds after selecting a new station.

Have you checked if you can adjust the buffer size your sound card uses while encoding?
