We may have to talk at some point

I used to do a lot of similar stuff when I did FX a long, long time ago as a teen (hence shotgun efx)

I keep meaning to get back into it.

The only problem with the book, which I thought would be the case before I bought it, is that it details a system very much like the existing OEM HUDs, like using segment displays and the like, not full graphic LCDs.

It basically looks at the development of HUDs in fighter jets, then there is some research about where I driver will look in different situations, how often they will look to certain areas, etc, then moves onto to look at the different parts of creating the HUD, focusing components, displays, etc.

From a quick flick through its seems they use the bright segment display, shine it on a angled mirror, through a focusing convex lense, then onto a collimator. There are quite a few formulas which should help you guys work out focusing distances, etc.

I'll read it cover to cover (its only 40-50 odd pages), then see what I can do about 'backing it up' to a pdf file or similar!

awesome, i can't wait to read, although i'll need some help with the equations part. Still have the same issues as before :P

Oh yev, i got them. I'll pm you, i don't want to take any that you were looking to play with, but i have my eye on two. They look cool, and i'm probablyy going to have to build somethoing to see what i wamt to see, but that shouldn't take too long. Thanks agaiin

    have fun with those

today i have got a change to talk to one of my customers who is a DA-Lite screen representative. i have requested a holographic screen sample from him, but there is a massive shortage for those, also there is no flexible version of holo screens, and just like a regular screens it's only effective @ night, besides you will end up with ugly windshield.

i think out bet is for polarized tint or 3m privacy.

one more thing he gave me a sample fabric catalog

DA-Lite produces acoustically transparent front projection screen, basically white screen with black backing, and dotted, you i can see though a million of dots, practical "NO"

Haha, practical no indeed! I like seeing as much of the road as possible

@shotgun, congrats on your lotto winnings (i totally missed that). Those screenshots look hot, did you design that or is that a program, and if so which one? Hehe, yes i know, probably won't run in Windows, you linux-lover.

@jiimmy, Does the book talk about focusing ahead of the screen, almost projected to a point. If it does, it woudl be great to get the hud adjustible to something like 20-50 ft infront of you. I'm wondering if there's a way to tie it into the speedo or GPS to make focus speed adjustible (thinking ahead of myself now)

@ydiddy, personally, i'm trying to make somehting modular that will fit many cars so that from the design, that way we can use it to the benifit of everyone. Right now we have to solve a few inherant problems, while staying legal, and after that we can talk about incorperation. Like everyone else here, cash flow is well, the major hinderance

Thanks, it's all home rolled. It's a framework written in Perl using the SDL library. HTML is used for the skins and all the animations and their behavior is derived from the naming conventions of the files and some hints in attributes.

I need to refine some of the ideas a bit, but when it's done, it's going to be damn flexible. I did all the graphics and animations in Fireworks 2 (yes it's old but not been much reason to upgrade for my uses)

As far as focusing, they call that "focus at infinity" or "focus at optical infinity" usually, I could not find that term in the amazon "Search Inside" though.

I've read in various research papers that 6ft out is probably close enough. Regardless, I don't think having to focus it depending on speed will be needed.

    edit
Actually Perl is super crossplatform and SDL is too (though I've had windows issues with it), in theory this would be quite easy to move to windows except my reliance (for now) on XMMS .

you're right that speed focusing may not be nessessary. can you send me the links to the frensnel lenses and the polarized sheets you got? I'm going to wait until jimmy comes back with the PDF before i get any other optics. Plus i need to pick up a few more components.

Also, that's home made...that's insane. You'd laugh but i wanted to build a diagonsitics program for my G20 like that, with a rendered image of the car and a touch selectable image of parts under the hood thatg OBD woudl give me immediate stats on parts, like damage control and such (red being there's a major issue). That is really amazing though. Oh, i don't think you have a GM car, but if you did, Mechanics has actually mapped all of the binary of the GM ECU, which would make your job ALOT easier.

If you finish and ever make it windows ready, and i get the CPC installed, i wouldn't mind betaing for a while

Your not insane, that's my goal too. Why the car is in the center there.

I have a 3d model of my car too and SDL has OpenGL bindings... but that's off in the distance.

    400k divx here

With the cable I'm getting, I can just download my rom from the car, the big things is that the parameter addresses vary from ecu to ecu, so they need to be mapped, that's what I'm waiting on. But with enough time and disassembly, you could reprogram it to do whatever.

The 2g mitsu guys have been doing this for ages, they can program the car so it wont' start without a secret foot pedal sequence and such.

I only got one little pocket fresnel (at a drug store) and haven't gotten any polarized film yet, so not sure on the links, I believe I did post some somewhere in this thread though.

well the problem is we still need to figure the optimal solution, and focusing for this before we could start desigining appearance etc etc
