Duh, fixed.
I've just been a little fascinated with the whole DIY 100" projection TVs anyway, but I thought maybe this lens could come in handy for something else.
Maybe I'll rig it to the NiteMax in the grille somehow and be able to see a bumper sticker a mile away!![]()
Seriously, I am thinking about magnifying the 2.5" LCD to project on one of those holopanels or through the holopanel on the windshield. This may or may not be the set up I finish with, but what the hell for $25.00.

I got a bunch of nice projection TV lens for under 10 bucks each at electronics goldmine, so good deals can be found.
Though that lens looks nice due to it's size. The ones I have are rather large. As far as using, just stick the lcd behind it and focus. You'll really need to replace the backlight with something brighter though.
This is just one of those lenses sitting in front of a camcorder viewfinder.
The lense itself.

Just like you would do a home theater projection set-up, only on a smaller scale. Similar to an LCD projector for PowerPoint slides, etc.
Reflector -> Light Source -> Isolation Plate -> Fresnels -> -> 2.5" LCD (or those real little ones we saw a few posts back) -> Projector lens -> screen (windshield, holopanel, passenger forehead).
Some fans for cooling...
The motors should give me an infinite amount of focusing power on the display side. Not sure what type of hookup is behind it, going to see when I get it.
My theory is the night vision display doesn't need to be super bright, so a lower wattage bulb emitting less heat is possible. Second, for the cops, I think the smaller (3") light source pointing almost straight up might be a little less noticeable than a 5" or 7" 400 nit monitor. Might be able to work some magic with mirrors too.
If that doesn't work, then I can point it towards the hood, aim it at a mirror, and display a rear holo panel under the speaker grille, facing me. A little ABS side shields would prevent light from escaping...
Like I said, all theory at this point. Cramming it into the dash is another hurdle.

I just thought id tell you that i've been doing this for a while now for pretty cheap too.
I've been using a PDA as my HUD and a small piece of tint (i've removed it now want to find a better way)
The way i did it was have the PDA hooked up to the usb sync cable which powers the unit and connects it to the computer then i've just been using a small program which turns the PDA screen into a second PC monitor.
All i do is have D3 load up on the PDA screen and let it run from there.
The PDA runs like a second monitor but it has VGA quality so i can actually see the text on the windshield.
I haven't been on here for ages so i didn't even see this thread so im sorry i couldn't offer any help from my end.
All i have is a PDA with Sidewindow loaded up which installs a driver on the carpc then lets u drag and move windows from the 7" monitor to the PDA screen
A simple easy and very thin way for a screen in the dash![]()
Hope this helps u guys out somewhat![]()

Is your screen transparent, ie have you taken the back off? And I'm guessing you can't adjust where you focus on the screen with that solution, ie. you have to adjust your eyes to focus back inside the car on the screen?
we did it. I didn't want to buy sidewinder, but yes, its a great and cheap way to do it (i have a few pics). We're working on the "better way" though as we want to remain in the legalities of the state. But you are quite right and it looked awesome. I liked iGuidance on it. In Night colors, it looks great. Read the 3rd or 4th page for a few pics
. i didn't use tints though.
This porject, however, is trying to use the NiteMax cameras as a whole, which provides us with a CCD, and a VGA capable 2.5" lcd, which cna be seperated and used independantly. Then we kept taking it a step further.
I would like to see pics of your goods man. I want to see where you put it.
jammy, the idea of the HUD is that its see through. Its like focusing from a car way ahead of you to a car infront of you. you still see everything, but you're focusing on something in particualr. Its pretty safe if done right.

Lol, I know a HUD is see through, I hadn't noticed he'd used that word in his post. So for a moment I thought he was basically just putting the PDA on top of his dash.
I'll go home now.
lol
