If your using it for what should be on a HUD (guages, nav) and it doesn't interfere with your view, even unfocused, I think it's probably safer than a regular cluster.

Either way you're moving your focus, only with an unfocused HUD, your eyes have to travel less from the view ahead.

Well my carpc isn't in the car right now but i have a O2 XDA IIs (a smartphone aka pda and phone)

And i have a small leather stand i made which just sits on the dash behind the gauge cluster where the phone lays on to project the nav on the windshield

I don't wanna cut up my dash and as the PDA is my phone a stand is more useful for me than getting a old PDA off ebay and using that altho i might go that way sooner or later

My PDA still sync's with the pc while i use the PDA's screen as a second monitor and i can recieve calls with a bluetooth headset.

I can install the software on my desktop pc and take some pics to show u D3 on the PDA screen and any other window i just gotta find the damn camera only camera i have right now is on the phone and i can't use it lol

Ok i can't for the life of mr find the digi cam so i took the webcam out from the car to show u.

I just used mapmonkey to give u an idea on what D3 would look like im sorry bout the brightness of the screens.

A note tho is if you start mapmonkey up when the PDA is set as a 3rd screen in my case mapmonkey will start up at the last position so if its on the PDA screen it will start from there

Least the video shows u how easy it is and the speed of the PDA's screen is good i can watch a video altho it seems that every 10 secs the screen slows down abit then goes back to full speed for movies for mapmonkey or viz etc its fine

Enjoy sorry i can't show it to u from inside the car right now how its normally hooked up.

Attached is 2 pics from my HUD in the car

My camera is a piece of S@#$ i swear

The images are of D3 in night mode showing the street the right way around (i did remove the tint but with how bad the camera is it wouldn't show the text anyway).

If you look at hud3 it is a crude drawing of how mines setup

The PDA is at about a 45to 60 degree angle and the mirror is on 95 to 110 degree

with the PDA up so high it stops the windshield seeing the reflection of the PDA but with the mirror back that far it reflects the image from the PDA and cause its a mirror it flips the image to display the text the proper way AKA u can read the streets and the GPS will move the right way.

The mirror i've used it a flimsy plastic with rounded edges (i don't want it flying off the dash into my eyes if it was a glass mirror)

The good thing about this is the display is CLEAR as it is VGA not composite. It's the right way up so its readable and the mirror stops the view the PDA screen from shining outside so if i cop drives past he wouldn't see it.

I used foam and leather for the stand and plastic mirror just incase i get into a crash and it goes flying the only thing that would hurt is the PDA which im working on if i wanted a carpeted dash cover that would hide it all and make sure the PDA doesn't go flying.

If you look at the screenshot of mapmonkey you can see that the text is actually the right way around on the windshield

With the tint on i get no doubble image at all cause im using a Plastic type mirror the image doesn't have to go through the glass to the back to reflect so there is no doubble image just a clear projected image.

Altho when i tried using a normal mirror i didn't get a doubble image either if i remember correctly.

the double image we get is of the windsheld, that's why none of us consider the project done yet. It might be the tint though, interesting...

you're just using simple mirror tint, right, or another type?

You are right the reason you get a doubble image is cause the reflection is off the inside of the glass and also the outside of the glass which creates a doubble image.

Actually it's a bit embrassing but i got the mirror off a bathroom mat lol

Had a bathroom mat which had a bendable plastic mirror on the mat with the words nice underwear lol

Using tint on the windshield will stop the doubble effect and the mirror will flip the image the right way around before it reflects onto the windshield.

I was actually working with a forum member here ages ago about doing a GPS HUD for his motorbike helmet buy using a PDA attached onto the bike and a wireless connection for the audio and video which projected the image onto the visor.

I've done alot of mods/projects which have used reflection and lens etc so i have the basic's down of making HUD's

I have asked the guy who makes the software for the PDA to flip the image and he said he will put it in a future version so it means i won't need a mirror at all

The cars with builtin HUD's have their windshield tinted (u know how stock tint is u don't really notice it) so thats how they get over the doubble image on the stock cars.

they have a flim built in by dupont with pevents the doubl image sanwiched between the glass. Something you can try is a screen flipper software. Thy were commonly used in prank software, but you can reverse engineer them t get teh desired effect. That's what i did initally. My firend is supposed to b workin on the coding when i get the LCD ready as there is a chance i can flip it mechancially/lectrially instead of using software

the tint that you are using to projet onto your windshild, not the mirror, is what i' curious about It seems clear, or is there no tint and your'e projecting straight onto the windshield? If so, then i need to check out that mirror of yours!
