It's both. A very similar technique is used in DIY projectors.

guys, sorry this si shrot, its been a really...really rough 24 hours. All i need is a gun and a mission and i could be like Jack Bower. *looks around my room* Scratch that...now i need a mission (jk jk)

    OKay...reading through...

@MGD, i said that earlier and linked to Dupont's news thread. The DUpont "Wedge", since ist between the two layers, is almost impossible to duplicate, so we need to find another way. We can't emulate, it stoo expenseive, so we are trying to come up with a whole new approach.

@ spaceskater. Your glass is curved? gah...mine is flat. ITs just at a horrible angle and i'll need to cut the cowle teh get in. Assuming i decide to go the guage cluster route (i'm undecided and mya just do both), i will also need to put a piece of film over it to help out with the reflection. I really don't mind that though Here's why: I'm having IGuidance and my GPS running all teh time. If the image is on, somewhere i'm going to have a little transperant box that's giving my speed, and maybe my navaigational heading. That way, if its on, if it blocks my view, it doesn't matter. I drive an A/T, so RPMS don't bug me as much as fuel level.

I'm interested to see your experimentation with the plastics and plexi. I know were' nto allowed to phave NAYTHING in the view of the driver, but i was thinking, if we can get the image to go off the plexi, we can hit this right behind the registration and insurance. I know it defeats the coolness of the project, but what cop is going to look and see that there's a strip of somthing there if you do it right?

@ Kornkow, nissan has em too

@everyone. Like i siad, i have been deaing wiht crap so my ideas are limited and not thought out. I'm just really glad this shot from a back and forth between alti and i to a nice discussion and new thinkers with ideas for us all to try. I'm thinking of lookin into the mechanism behind day/night mirros nad seeing what we can do with that on either the gauge or the windshield.

oh, i'm waiting for quantum to come back and say something. He's been quiet lately and i don't know what he has up his sleeves. He know of something with the properties that we are looking for for pretty cheap.

Hehe, everything we're doing is projection, lens or not.

Anyone seen this? The video looks pretty good. Light on details.

    DIY HUD

As far as hiding it from other viewers, got me thinking about that 3m privacy screen I have. One side of the flexible type is glossier than the others.

In my simple tests, if the angle between the lcd is less than ~45, it displays perfectly. Some of the light still will still leak out to the window though. Though it looks less like a double image due to the composition of the material. Much more diffused.

If you rotate the material 90 degrees, there is no reflection (as it's meant to limit the light passing through it to a very narrow view angle, but it does obscure the view through it somewhat. More towards the bottom, but depending on how you locate it, it might be the front of the car itself you are occluding and nothing important.

I'll try and get some pics in a couple days.

shadow, can you give some links / ideas on where i should start searching / reading up on optics? I am convinced that the only why i will be happy with this is if i use a lens to make the image the size i want. I will post pictures of what i have setup so far and i will try to illustrate what i have in mind.

Tested out my 3m filter theory. So far looks very promising.

One problem was that I forgot my PS for my video camera so no video on the screen. It's pouring out so I'm not going back out there again tonight.

Here's a nitemax lying on the dash near the base of the windshield.

Here, I'm using a piece of the privacy filter to reflect the image. Still quite a bit of ghost.

Here, I took another piece of privacy filter and put it rotate 90 degrees to how you would normally use it and layed it on top of the LCD. Like I thought, does a good job of filtering the light (At the expense of a little light output)

Another plus is YOU can't really see the lcd either.

On another note, I found a source for real and cheap HUD glass and maybe some films to possibly help with lcd brightness problems or at least help with upgrading your own backlights

I'll post some links as soon as my order is confirmed

Go shotgun. how's the image quaility? how bad does it degrade, if at all?

Wait, did you have it refect the image onto the windwhield or did you use it to reflect on just in the filter? Have you trued ut reflecting off the glass?

Well I did some tests (inside the house) and it doesn't look like it degrades much if at all, thought it's hard to hold 3 things at once and keep it steady .

The light coming out of the lcd is coming straight through so there really shouldn't be any effect. Then when it's bouncing off the other piece, it's not passing through it so again, shouldn't degrade the picture.

FYI, you probably could use any plastic for the reflector and not the privacy screen, I just had two pieces with me, so I used it.

I'll get some pics with a signal on it in the next few days (who knows, maybe tonight).

Another thing I'm thinking is about grabbing a Gamebody SP advanced maginifer screen. They're dirt cheap on ebay and just about the right size for the nitemax. For ~ $5 shipped, seems worth a shot.

here's a thought: use a thin, clear, reflective piece of plastic to reflect the image, and put the privacy film (polarizer) behind it, up-down polarized, and the light will not be reflected off of the windshield, but off the plastic. Somebody try this?

No, shotgun, i thnk, wihtout a doubt, thats' the most ingenius idea ever...i'm hoping we can get a clear polarized film or something. As for those magnifiers, link me. I think i'm using a 7" instead, but fpr the gauge cluster, this woudl rock

As for holding three things up, you got Jedi powers, use em! That or your feet no excuses!
