Computer to control Air Bag solenoids?

I am installing a computer into a project vehicle. I am trying to make the computer control the airbags rather than having to run a seperate screen for the system. Has this been done before or can the RS-232 be used to control it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks in advance

I guess my only question would be why would you want to do this? Computers are not the most reliable thing, and having them control something that is going to supposedly save my life would be a pretty scary thing.

This brings to mind a whole new meaning for the term "Blue Screen of Death". I think you better stick to dedicated hardware made for controlling airbags that already has government approval. Also, you need split second response times for activation. RS-232 is relatively slow and low priority. Bad Idea if you ask me.

I think he might mean suspension airbags, not the one for collisions.

Yeah, probably he ment suspension airbags :D, I remember someone was asking this question beore, and got same replays :)

Just so the OP doesn't get discouraged...I'm sure it can be done and I'm sure it has been done before.

I'm not sure it's been posted on this site...but it's worth looking into!

If that is the case, some relay board via serial or USB should be able to provide the interface. There are plenty of threads discussing those for various other uses.

Air Ride Technologies has an electronic module for controlling their suspension systems. I'm certain that their module could either be hacked or reverse-engineered to work with a PC and relays.

My only concern would be a BSOD while you're raising the car.
If the PC crashes while inflating the bags, they could keep inflating with no ability to stop. I'm certain that over-inflating the bags isn't a good thing and could cause damage to the bags, the lines, the compressor or othyer components in an air suspension setup.
