    Question: SBC computers.

How do you power these things?
do you need a backplane or does it have a standard ATX plug?
If you owned or used one, could you give an opinion on what is an ideal clock speed for carputing?

There are a variety of SBCs with a variety of ways to power it. Some power through a backplane, some ATX, and there even are those with a 12v plug. You're better off just determining how you would like to power one, and only search for those products.

As for ideal clock speed for carputing, that's not dependent on SBCs as this affects all carpcs. Your ideal clock speed is what you plan to do with it. Just mp3s (headless, even) you wouldn't need anything faster than a pentium 133, I'd imagine. You probably would want to instead ask 'what's the ideal clock speed for processing x, y, and z' as "carputing" covers so much ground and too vague to give any sort of answer for.

Both the SBC systems I have had were powered through a hard drive molex connector.

My first SBC system was a 233MHz Pentium MMX. It was adequate for what I wanted to do (play music).

My second system is a 1GHz Via C3 LP. It is also adequate for what I want to do (Music, GPS, servo control for heater controls).
Old Systems retired due to new car
New system at design/prototype stage on BeagleBoard.

Thanks for the prompt reply guys.
I've been looking around for a nice little SBC to do some protyping for my car.
I'm having problem finding one thats about 800-1000mhz and fits a 6.5" x 5" enclosure. Any suggestion?
Oh, by the way, does all SBC works with windows XP? or they only uses some kind of embedded systems?
    thanks again.

    very quick search on ebay:
eBay: Nexcom Peak 703P Pentium M Half Size PISA SBC Brand NEW (item 300092523725 end time Mar-27-07 10:37:19 PDT)
pentium m, looks pretty small but no idea of real size. their site says win2k support, winxp might work.

    eBay: AVDANTECH PCM-9373 3.5" SBC (item 320096121153 end time Mar-27-07 23:45:02 PDT)
really small (the 3.5" sbc will definitely fit your size spec), eden 667 cpu, so on the slower side, but it's a nice sbc all the same.

you really should stop phrasing your questions with a sense of "all". computers are different and there will be some that work, and some that don't. look for drivers as a clue if it'll work cuz *that's* what will hold you back. It's like any computer, really!

I will give widefault a shout. thanks for the info.

I was looking at the advantech site yesterday and your setup as well.
I couldn't figure if there were any driver availible for these setup with winXP.
There were no information on the advantech website regarding the OS, and from ur spec your system is running win98.
From the picture that setup is beautiful. Mind if i ask how much you paid for it? and where?

"How much" is below (from memory). "Where" is all over (it's not an off the shelf thing that you just go and buy)

    Cpu:

Motherboard was about 230 from Sempahore Systems
256MB SODIMM Ram was cheap from dabs.com
512MB Disk-on-module was about 50 Miles Industrial Electronics Ltd
8Gb compact flash hard drive was about 90
Case was about 5 from Maplin (trimmed aluminium project box).
Fans were about 10 from Maplin (hard drive bay cooler).
PSU and servo controller is custom design and build (less than 50 of parts, mostly salvaged from my last system).

    Screen (not pictured):

LTM08C351 was 26 for 2 panels from ebay (I got very lucky indeed).
Touch panel and controller was about 100 from Miles Industrial Electronics Ltd
Backlight inverter was about 20 from Miles Industrial Electronics Ltd

    Servos:

About 15 from ebay. High torque, steel geared.
Old Systems retired due to new car
New system at design/prototype stage on BeagleBoard.
