Setting up your carpc using the M-Audio 1010LT

The 1010LT seems to be an awesome card in that it's:
a) cheap
b) abundant
c) has internal routing
d) supports ASIO
e) can combine multiple cards, each with 8 analog output channels for a total of 32 channels of analog out (if using multiple cards, you must use a 75 ohm spdif cable between EACH card)

Disadvantages:
a) you can't hibernate with this card: startup and shutdown ONLY
b) can't run more than one instance of Frequency Allocator (if you can even do that with any other cards)

Initial setup with the card has given me a few problems, but now that I have them all sorted out, I'm enjoying audio over ASIO. Here's how I did it.

First, open the M-Audio control panel.

Scroll all the way to the right and mute SW RTN for channels 1-8. This will stop any echoing caused by the card.

On the output tab, set SPDIF out to SPDIF In. This eliminates any chance of M-Audios "Mixer" or Windows to feed any extra info into the SPDIF channel. It doesn't matter if you use SPDIF in or SPDIF in INV as we're just using internal routing to mute the SPDIF channel.

We're done there. Next lets go to console.

On the Audio tab, select ASIO and then the channel button. The only channels you'll need are Monitor L and R. I have Analog 1+2 selected as well for my HD-radio to feed audio in.

And then you can do what you wish in console... Here is my "temporary" processing tree.

Next let's fix windows sound. Under control pannel, go to the Sounds and Audio settings. Click the "Audio" tab. We're going to change what channel windows outputs sound on to SPDIF. This will feed windows sound directly in to Monitor mixer and then to Console for processing. If you don't do this, windows will play all of it's sounds on channels 1 and 2.

Finally, lets configure winamp. Control + P will bring up the properties page. On the output tab, select DirectSound and click Configure.

On the the "Device" tab, select Delta 1010LT SPDIF. This will set winamp to directly output sound on SPDIF, and likewise, into mixer.

There you have it. You are now finished. Now go enjoy your processing ASIO power of the 1010LT and Console, the remarkable Professional Mixing card that's $135-150 shipped on Ebay!

Thanks goes to Durwood for helping me sort out some issues, especially muting the SW RTNs to fix echoing. I would not have thought of that.

Sweet! So it works with no loopback cable right? I looked at this card as an alternative card to my prodigy Hifi 7.1 since it was in the same price range and had the routing capabilities. I've been trying to talk my friend into picking up this card because I thought it would work for this.

Also, I don't think any computer could run multiple instances of of Allocator Full unless you had an extremely fast dual core processor. It should however be able to run multiple instances of Allocator Lite.

Somewhere Iceman_jkh found a hibernation utility. I think any card running ASIO will have issues hibernating just because it's so touchy. I'll have to see if I can find it because I want to test it myself. For now I have to go full startup and shutdown too.

What did you end up setting your latency sampling at to get rid of pops and clicks? Max probably?

Did the Voxengo Audio delay help with the clicking and popping? I just saw that recently and wondered if it would help.

the first voxengo delay is so I can easily switch between normal processing and ambiophonics for A/Bing

two clicks and it's A/B instead of having to re-trace the wires. You can also see all sources lead to output 1+2 for right now because I'm sitting in my room with only two speakers

No loopback as well.

I'm running 256 buffer sample size right now simply because I have not played with it. I switched to 64 buffer samples and am noticing no immediate degridation in quality. Sample rate is locked in a 44.1khz

I'll have to try allocator light. It's just a shame to have paid so much for a software I can't run multiple instances of... I'm running a dual core 1.8ghz Pentium 6300 processor with 1gb ram and I still can't run two.

The problem, as I've found, is not running multiple instances of allocator. It's pulling multiple instances from a saved file at the same time. I'm not sure if console confuses the programs. Usually if I create a new console structure with multiple allocators there's no issue, but as soon as I save and "re-open", pops and clicks. Not sound card related, though.

How are you getting console to automatically open up a file on bootup?

I save the config file. Then I just place a shortcut to that config file into the windows startup folder. Easy as pie.

the 1010LT has the I/Os for a good active setup but i'm concerned about the voltage output. are you using the analog outputs to send the signal to your amplifiers?

yes and I haven't noticed any issues whatsoever.

Runing analog outs directly to my Soundstream Rubicon 604 amp powering peerless HDS and Seas Excel Mag W15cy (5.5") at ~60wrms @ 8 ohm with the gain at 1/2 gets LOUD. I will be bridging a 604 for just the Seas, giving around 200wrms @ 8 ohms 14.4v for some headroom

durwood, I've noticed that recently, my console isn't going to auto-"live". I have to press "live" and then minimize and launch RR. It was working dandy before. Any ideas? I haven't had time to play.

Hmm no idea on the "auto live". I've never had any issues like that. Did you save a config file with everything active and then point a shortcut in the windows startup?

Is it happening when you run the program or is it when the computer comes out of standby, hibernation, or startup?

well it was working for a while, then when I pulled the 'puter to hook up the hd radio it stopped. I re-saved the config file in "live" mode. When the PC starts up, after everything loads, console opens and opens the config file. All settings, crossover points, and whatnot are correct - just not "live". So then I have to hit the "live" button, minimize (if I don't minimize, it goes "un-live") and launch RR.

I realize calling it "live" makes me sound like a damn fool, but I think it's the best way to describe it.

I knwo what you mean about "live" so it's all good. Not sure what the name of that button is anyway.

Well that is strange. I'm not sure what would cause that but I suspect maybe it has something to do with the HD radio if it stopped workign after you installed that. maybe it's muting the soundcard and so then console goes unactive? Just a guess. I have yet to hook up my HD tuner, so I'll have to see what happens to mine. It won't be anytime soon though.
