    Trying to Figure it all out

    Hey audio geeks. I am trying to wrap my head around all this and want to see if I have everything straight so far.

    My goal is to do 2 way active front channels and a sub output. Currently I am running a laptop in the car so looking at USB solutions.

    I have been doing some testing on my laptop and have been able to use:
    OpenMobile -> VAC -> ASIO4All -> Console -> ASIO4All -> Internal Sound card/speakers
    and
    OpenMobile -> VAC -> ASIO4All -> VSTHost -> ASIO4All -> Internal Sound card/speakers

    I don't have any multiple channel audio cards on windows computers so I have not been able to test that, but I have been able to an active crossover between Left and Right channels with one HP and one LP (Kind of weird with headphones on).

    So now that I feel like I have my head wrapped around the basics I come to what to I buy for the carpc? I have found somewhere I can get a ESI Gigaport HD. I can't really tell what the best choices are for USB sound cards but see this one mentioned a lot and actually found it for sale. Are there others better/cheaper/whatever choices? Since you can use ASIO4All does it even matter anymore if the card supports ASIO? Can you just use a cheap card like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829180006 ? I am sure its DAC is no where near as good, just wondering if it is possible?

    Thanks for any guidance.

    i have the gigaport HD. it has very low outputs, so i would not recommend it without a preamp(my jl cl-rlc's are working great), and the ASIO drivers are useless. the driver is listed only as a output, with no input, so there is no way to get audio into a vst host to output to the card..

    at least, i have not found a way yet-- if anyone figures out how to do it using the gigaport hd's asio driver without A4A, please let me know..

    A4A is a great way to get the better audio processing quality through the vst host, but it still uses the WDM drivers..

    i have windows 7, and have been just using the WDM driver for the sound card in audiomulch and cannot tell the difference..

    it might be worthwhile to try that cheap sound card-- at the very worst, your out $25, and if your anything like me, you probably have plenty of things you can order from newegg, so between the rebates, and discounts, it could really almost cost nothing..

    Interesting. On Win7 here as well. I was able to get it working with all the other sound options as well, just wasn't sure yet it there was an advantage to using ASIO so worked to get that working as well.

    So really the only downs to the cheapo could be low outputs and possibly not so great DAC. Personally as long at there is not straight up noise like from a horrible on board card I think I will be ok with it.

    Looks like I need to finally decide which tweeter to match up to some RS150s and convince the wife she needs some new front speakers once I take the infinitys out.

    sounds like fun!!

    the specific advantage to ASIO is that it is a audio codec that better handles audio streams. this was primarily during the xp days, but the standard windows codecs don't always carry audio at it's highest quality, so A4A was developed as a intermediary to help those that needed it..

    This stuff is addicting. Already debating moving to a 3way front stage.

    try to hear it before considering it-- i was thinking about it a while back, and demoed some hertz mille speakers, the 2 and 3 way versions side-by-side, and determined that the mid seemed to color the sound too much for my tastes.. not to mention, the added complexity of having another audio source to align.

    Ahh, will keep that in mind. I think I am going to go ahead and run the speaker wires so I can unbridge an amp and add the dedicated mid later if I want. Have to find a decent mid to cover the range I am looking for anyway. Also wish more speakers had their off axis response listed. Would help for picking something out.
