I've ordered the Auzentech sound card (user replacable opamps and clocks). Yes, it's only 1/8" jacks, but I'm going to see if I can desolder the end plate, and resolder on RCA jacks.

mobo: MSI 945GM2 H-F - I went with this board for a few reasons. I knew that I was going to need a good deal of processing power if I was going to run all of this software. The Pentium Ds are cheap and powerful. That and the fact that this board has the ALC 880 audio chipset on it, which is capable of running bit perfect. If I ever decide that I want to use the optic out (if this sound card doesn't work for me), I know that I can just use the onboard optic out and have bit perfect.

    processor: Pentium D 915 2.8 GHz
    memory: 1 gig DDR2 667
hard drive: I'm looking at using a solid state drive for the OS and all programs. However, since XPe is going to be supporting USB booting, that might change to a 6 gig or so solid state USB drive, which would probably be faster than the CF card in the first place. Else, for media and video, I'll have at least a 400 GB SATA 3 drive in there, possibly 2.
video: just using onboard, no need for a bad *** video card for this kind of a set-up (an an 8" screen).

Now I'm just trying to narrow down the software side of things.

Thinking TrueRTA (just need to pick a mic now)
    Allocator
    Console
Not sure about the EQ, would like a standalone where I don't have to purchase another package and use the EQ plugin...but I'm not sure on it yet.

    Ideas? Thoughts?

Ok so you decided to change the whole mobo setup and all. That Azuentech Meridian looks nice. A review would be nice when you get it. ALso, you don't want to use 1/8" to RCA adapters? Worried about noise I take it?

Reasonable mic options for True RTA:

Did you have something against the plugin/EQ? Did it give you problems? Just curious.

Noise, adding another adapter in line, and the fact that the 1/8" jacks just aren't as secure as the locking RCAs I use.

Thanks! I've been hearing that the Behringer isn't the best, but because it's cheap, it's what people use. I'm not willing to go cheap to that extent. What mic are you using?

It's probably just ignorance really. I have a hard time believing that the free plug-ins for WinAmp would work as well and be as accurate as others. Again, it's probably just ignorance speaking....hehehe

I'm going to try the free ones first, but I wanted to have a few options in case.

I went cheap and use the Behringer Mic. Of course it's been over a year since the last time I actually used an RTA. I prefer to sit and listen for hours and experiment, then use the RTA when I think I am close. I am still learning though. There are probably more options out there, but those are readily available.

Ya you have a point about those 1/8" plugs. I had one loose at a comp once and didn't even realize it until it was too late.

As far as the EQ's there could be problems. If there is money behind it its more likely to work better. I haven't determined if there is any problem with the free ones yet, but Fryedaug seemed to be having some problems.

I was thinking the other day too...There might be a problem using these programs with a video program/DVD playback. Is there any DVD/video player that uses ASIO?

one of the things I've read is that you will have problems if you are watching video. There has been talk about using a delay on the video, but since I don't watch video/dvd on my carpc I'm not to worried about it, but that might change with this new set-up since it will be on display more and not just for sound.

I don't really watch DVD's very often either but at shows people love to see it in action. So again this is where the KX driver project has a one up on the ASIO method, since all the processing is done within the soundcard.

...back to more testing and research.

Probably the Meridian. Sounds like a very promising soundcard. (It also has 5V output voltage on the analog outs with potential for a max of 8Vp-p.) *DROOL
