Thread: audio over USB v. optical

No 5.1 or 7.1 here, just ASIO output via USB to High quality DAC chips.....

Maybe the best solution for 8 channels is 4 seperate stereo DAC chips on one board with 4 seperate USB inputs and 4 digital receiver chips to convert the ASIO stream to I2S stereo pairs.

Hopefully the 4 USB outputs can be sent different channels from the Frequency Allocator, I would guess the whole key is getting software to recognize the multiple USB receiver chips as seperate channels so you can assign the correct out to the correct channel after the VST processing.

I am positive i have read in a forum that someone has multiple USB DACs working together already..

the TUSB3200 chip supports 8 channels, sorry Red nothing I have seen will give us 10. It's not a processor but more of a communitcation device designed to interface with as many as 8 mono dacs. Problem is requires a driver to be written to control the routing part.

it is, but by calling it 7.1 or 5.1 it's signifying to me that the intent is surround sound and anything else isn't desired.

I just think it's taking this thread in another direction than initialy intended.

well it seems roaddog wants 7.1 but Felix, Turbo, scott, and myself are working towards 8 channel stereo outputs. I think we win.

that's what I was trying to point out earlier.

It's perfectly fine to come to the forum and want help on finding a solution. But to jump into another thread and try and change it to be what you're looking for causes problems.

Perhaps we should start another thread specifically for the 5.1/7.1 solutions.

Again, I will repeat this...you must first learn to crawl before you can walk. We must first get the basics worked out before we can move onto the more advanced features (like surround sound decoding built in, or the like).

This is precisely why I initially decided to go at finding a solution on my own.

Well if he wants to start a new thread thats up to him. I was almost thinking we should move parts of this thread or start a new thread over in hardware development. Might bring out some electrical gurus.

Roaddog no, hard feelings, its just that 7.1 surround sound is not the goal here. To do 7.1 you need a decoder. The decoder has to be programmed which makes it a processor. We don't want a processor. We are trying to get a device the puts out pure stereo output to multi-channels. There are plenty of 7.1 sound cards already available. Soundcards are different then DACs.

One more thing i was just thinking, The USB3200 is USB1.1.

I believe Each individual USB 1.1 connection will be limited by bandwidth to one stereo pair of 24/96 audio.

That is why i was thinking 4 seperate USB3200 chips.

Need to locate a USB2 USB audio streaming chip.
