FYI: I didn't read all 16 pages so maybe you know already. USB 2.0 has a shared bandwidth of 480Mbps Unless of course the motherboard has more then one USB controller. I only mention this because I thought I read something about you wanted to do dual usb dacs. Which would have to share the same 480Mbps anyways.

Vista........I'm waiting for SP1 and 6 months, which ever is longer. And it takes like 800+megs of ram to run with no programs! I think Vista is too much of a power hog to try and run in a car. Maybe for a Home theater system or DJ system. Well thats my 2 cents.

Depending on final cost i may want a non vista one . added to watched list
Um, I guess this is where you put something witty.WITTY

I am pretty sure bit perfect is out. Since the audio will be processed by the CPU anyway and ASIO is needed, it won't work from my understanding. Instead, all we need to really focus on is Jitter.

This is why I haven't tried Bit Perfect. Are you guys also going to sacrifice those other sounds for the music?
If we do all audio processing on the computer, it won't be bit perfect any more. regardig Durwood's comments.

I think I would be fine with a 3000+ AMD, but I really didn't think of the guys with the Epia and slow CPU's. At the same time, with this new mutiple DAC device were discussing, would it be able to run on a low speed processor like most folks have or would they need to upgrade to faster CPU's? I don't think we mentioned this before.

The software part requires a minimum of Pentium4/Athlon. With all the software audio processing running on a Pentium M 1.8 I have, ~50% CPU usage. I was told that my EPIA would choke. I never tried it, but I believe it. That's why I am upgrading.

yeah - because of the processing power needed to do all processing, I don't think the vista requirements will be an issue.

Someone asked about why it's better to have an analog volume control as opposed to digital (or PC controlled). I think I found out why.

Currently, (with XP) the WDM volume control lowers the volume by taking away bits, or reducing the resolution. Playing back music at low volumes using software volume control will not sound as good as it would if you were to leave the data alone (and not decrease the resolution) and attenuate the analog signal using high quality potentiometers or volume chips like the Cirrus Logic 3310 or 3318 or the TI/Burr Brown PGA2310 or PGA4311.
Vista will adjust the volume using internal floating point values rather than integer. So it does not reduce resolution as XP did.

For Windows, that makes sense. However, the person I heard it from wasn't referring to Windows based. He's going to be here tonight, I'll ask him then.

So Red, your planning to upgrade your PC to a faster unit and run a non Windows based OS like Linux or a variant of Linux?
