    Bandwidth issues are as follows:

    USB1.1 = 12MB/s per controller

    USB2 = 480MB/s per controller, several motherboards have 2 USB2 controllers now.

    Just for the audio data, there is other data sent across the USB line also.(timing and packet stuff??)

    16 bit at 44.1KHz(44,100 samples per second), cd standard rate, is 16 x 44100 = ~0.71 MB/s for mono -- 1.42 MB/s in stereo. USB1 is plenty good for this.

    24/96 is 4.6 MB/s mono so 9.2 MB/s Stereo. USB1 would be at or over its limits..

    USB2 could handle over ~40 channels of 24/96 audio then..

    These numbers are theoretical and I am sure there is more to the transfers than this..

    I'm sticking to XP until Vista has more support and has more bugs worked out.

    In order for me to switch, every single program I need to run on the computer would have to run flawlessly (relative) on Vista.

    Just don't think that's possible right now.

    Hi guys,
    I got a call to join the thread
    You do want to do sofware processing on 8 channel with a usb dac,actually I don't think it will be possible with any usb dac alone,but here are some hint from the idea of my second setup with 2 sound card(i then realized i could do the same with 1 card of mine).
    First you need a card with internal routing of audio,I had an audiotrak prodigy 7.1 lt and it was perfect for the task.
    You then route the windows audio to a windows virtual input(using WDM audio) that's all the first card will do,then you can send the output with the usb dac.
    You need a vst host that can process wdm audio,since asio can handle one sound card at a time,and brainspawn forte will be perfect for this.It's a host vst rack based that can do everything you haver dreamt for.
    You simply take the audio from the wdm input,process it any way you want and then you direct it to the usb dac.Simply Enough!
    For vst i suggest the following : antares filter(best xover ever),voxengo delay and voxengo curveeq(this is too cool).Too bad they aren't freeware except delay.
    Btw,why is usb dac the only option?

    I have a prodigy 7.1 hifi I am already doing this with too but with a program called Console to string the VST plugins together such as Frequency Allocator for filtering, voxengo for delays, and have not decided on eq yet.

    We want a USB DAC for external reasons, might not have room for a PCI card. Also, a DAC to eliminate things from the signal path that might alter the sound in an unwanted way and get nothing but a super high quality signal out. A good high quality stereo DAC will put any soundcard to shame, the problem is doing it with multiple channels and with ahigh voltage output to reduce unwanted noise that could be picked up from having a low signal voltage.

    The trouble is that multiple channel DACs just don't exist as far as all the info we have or haven't found. Do you know of a multi-channel DAC? Or did you try using mutilple stereo DACs? Please explain your soundcard combined with a DAC setup. Just remember, we need to leave the PCI soundcard out though. I think we could do this with a program called Virtual Audio Cable which allows you to capture the audio stream and send it to any app. It's a virtual soundcard.

    My previous setup was 2 pci card,but should work the same with one pci plus usb dac.But i don't know of any usb dac that will allow audio routing,so you will be forced to use at least one pci,unless you find a way.
    Multiple stereo dac should work in theory,but in reality you will surely find many problems,conflict and so on.
    BTW I am now connected with my 1820m with external rack where the dac is with an external psu,so i get the best of both worlds,output voltage is more than normal headunit,everything is connected in balanced.
    Altough i don't think like suggesting it to other people,drivers are buggy and i had to tweak some circuitry inside to make it sound good,altough its awesome spec and still now i think it miss some punch-bass.
    However the whole thing of having the dac external for space saving is a little without meaning,if the reason of that is that you want to use some epia mainboard,i currently have setup the system for a simple 2 way plus subwoofer and my celeron d 2.4ghz is suffering a lot,and when watching video it stay at 100%,so you won't be surely able to use it with an epia,if you want to run it on 3-way system.

    christian - I think that if you can read the thread you will understand why the conditions are set forth as they are. We've been over and over and over the conditions. I think that it will make some sense why we have the conditions set forth that we do.

    I'd also see this thread: audio over USB v. optical

    It will help to explain the tuning side of this.

    so... is anyone still interested in just having 4 DAC's and figure it all out through software?

    Cause my friend was telling me about "fmod", which you can aparently do all of this with... The programming would have to be in either C, C++, C#, or Visual Basic, so I'm not sure how friendly it would be for different setups...

    I'll know more this weekend when he can show me some of what he's done, and whether or not it possible..

    Basically Fmod is able to use Vst's, Dsp's, and is capable of outputing to multiple sound cards... so it sound's like it will be everything we need...
