tomtom and garmin sold over 20 million PNA devices last year. phone companies like nokia and htc sold close to 200 million(i thought it was 100mil, but its close to 200 million) gps enable phones. nokia bought navteq for a a few billions and tomtom bought teleatlas for a few billions too. i think the number speak for themselves.


i have an htc mogul and the battery is pretty decent. talk time is about 4 hours and with the gps on it gets about 3 hours. if i'm driving long distance with the phone, i would hook it up to the power adapter.

So by that logic everyone who bought a GPS enabled phone is using it for GPS? It sucks battery and the screen is too small to see anything well.

I have a HTC phone and I dont use GPS on it...

if people do not use their phone for navigation, why companies spent billions and billions for gps hard ware and software? why do you think nokia bought navteq for a cool few billions for? again, just look at the numbers guys. numbers do not lie.

I have to agree with 2k1toaster I could never imagine using my phone for gps, maybe if I had the taliban chasing me and I needed to get away.

I spent $1,000 on a PDA phone a few years ago. I still have iGuidance installed on it, but in the few years I've owned it, I only used 10 times or less. I'm hooked on GPS navigation on a PC. A PC GPS is not for everyone, it's not for most people on the planet, but it's definitely for most people reading this thread, isn't it?

so, you telling me, if given the same price, you rather look at phone screen over 7" screen for gps??? Number is there cuz, everyone has phone, but only few owns carpc(it's still luxurious & complicate device for many).. We are talking about future not current statistics.. 5~7 years from now, let's see how many will still use pda for gps over carpc...

given the choice of course i will take an indash system anytime, and an indash system with a 7" wide lcd is what i have. however, many people do not have this choice. the number of people like us (mp3car) are very very small compare to the general population, so the market for pc/laptop navigation isnt there and in 5 to 7 years more and more people will move to devices such as the iphone and other smart phone for navigation. 5 yrs ago, i dont remember any companies that make carpc to sell and now, 5 years later, that market for carpc has not change much. 5 yrs from now i doubt it will change much either. if given a choice between a car pc and a PNA, the PNA will always be cheaper, and the market have been moving to PNA devices like tomtom and garmin. just go to best buy and see it for yourself. in my opinion, 5 yrs from now people will move away from PNA to smart phone devices.

i also have the sprint htc mogul and it is no indash system but i can use it no problem as a navigation device. unlike many 7" wide lcd of an indash system, smart phone lcd has a longer height than its width and since navigation software usually show the direction you travel up on top, it is an advantage to have a longer height to see more of the road that you will be traveling on. with a wide lcd, you can see more of the road on the sides that you wont be traveling on. compare a smart phone device to a most medium to low end PNA device, you can still see as much of the important information on the map with the smart phone as with a small but wide lcd on many of the medium to lower end PNA devices.

i agree with you on everything you said execept one thing. I don't care how smart a phone's gonna get or how long and wide it's gonna get.. it's still a little tiny thing you have to struggle with.. That's big limitation and can't be improved unless they come up with some virtual **** like tech from minority report When carpc price drops and become more of common thing that car dealers wouldin't mind throwing in for a few hundred bucks.. then people will say good bye to pda/smart phone gps.. Just remember how much those 50' plasma tv used to cost 5 years ago and how much they cost now with a lot better spec....

This has turned into a silly conversation. I don't carry my car around everywhere. If I'm in my car, I'll use the navigation system in it. But no matter how great it is, I'm not going to chuck my phone.

It's allowed to have more than one GPS in your life, folks.
