Work has stopped paying for my cell phone. I would like to know which provider is the easiest to tether via USB or blue tooth? I am currently running RR & DXF. I would also like to setup blue tooth for phone control thru RR as well. I have searched, but this kind of info just dose not jump out at me. This will be a first for me, so going with the right provider & phone from the get go would be half the battle won. THANKS.
i have an iphone and i think i may have found the easiest way to do it with that. i take my computer everywhere with me and they get awfully boring with you dont have internet. but i can hook mine up via blue tooth or usb and the both move pretty quick. i should also add that im an avid iphone user

You can tether your iphone to you PC and use the internet connection? Can you also make and recieve calls thru your PC, and both by the blue tooth connection? How fast is the internet when using this? What is the app that you are using? Did you have to jail break the phone?
IMHO, the n900 will offer the greatest amount of flexibility in integration. You can literally make calls with bash scripts, which you can't do with android and I'm pretty sure you can't with the iphone either. It runs maemo5 which has more in common with a normal Linux desktop than any other phone currently on the market. You don't need to 'jail break' it, it's already open, unlocked, and ripe for the hackings.

I can't seem to find a provider that carries the Nokia n900. If it has been discontinued, what model may have replaced it? If it is unlocked, will I have to buy it at full price and figure out how to get service for it? Sorry for the cumb questions, I just not well educated when it comes to cell phones.
the n900 works best on Tmobile since it supports the 1700mhz 3G band. no AT&T 3G
and yes, you have to buy it unlocked.

There are a bunch of programs out there that allow you to control your phone. Most of them are for Windows thought and as of right now i have a Mac and my VMware is acting up so im having trouble running windows right now. ill geet it fixed and do some research for you. as far as making calls i dont know how good the front ends are but i just figured you could do it that way. Most of the programs that let you control your screen work like a remote desktop nothing more. but im sure there is a way to have full iphone function on your computer. Yes it is very fast considering its a phone i thought it was gonna be a lot slower but it surprised the hell out of me. i can connect it bluetooth or usb i normally use it with usb just because that will charge it while i use it. i have had it hooked up both ways on my computer (mac) but only usb on a PC and it worked pretty good on PC too. ill do some homework and try and figure something out for you.
Oh i forgot to talk about jail breaking... well yes i did have to but i found the most painless way to do it. you jail break it and one one program that allows you to use thngs for the later version iphones.. type a url in safari on your iphone and install the tethering from there took me 5 minutes..
just wanted to add that 'unlocked' phones mean that they can work with almost any phone company(carrier), you only need to supply a SIM card, which you can get from your carrier.
i have a mytouch 3g that i've rooted and flashed cyanogen's custom rom to. the process is dead simple and now i have tethering through usb, bluetooth, or wifi. were i in your shoes i'd probably go for the nexus one if you have good t-mobile coverage in your area or the droid if not.
my non-techie dad has a blackberry that he uses for tethering so they must be pretty damned easy to get to work too.
