Although not ideal nor do I believe there is any ideal solution, just what is best suited to your needs. The touchpad is a simple elegant solution provided it is placed where it can be easily accessed. The cursor size can be changed making it much easier to see, also when using StreetDeck gestures can be performed much easier on the touch pad than on a touch screen even without looking. You can even bind right click to a function, I have right click bound to a function and simply tap the upper right hand corner of touchpad to toggle voice command (also without looking). The vertical right side of the touch pad is a slider that in can StreetDeck be used to scroll up and down or volume control depending on what you set mouse wheel to in StreetDeck. Not to mention you will never have fingerprints or smudge marks on your screen using a touchpad.

No matter what input device you choose occasionally you will have to take your eyes off the road (even when just using the touch screen) but a good input device will keep this to a minimum

    Thanks for all the replies!
This is definatley a tricky one, currently the best two options are looking like the 3dconnexions SpaceNavigator or a Touchpad..
My only issue with a touchpad is the pointer always being on screen.. I've played around with RR and found I can use gestures on the touchpad for use without looking at the screen.
Is there any way to have the pointer only appear when the mouse is moving? and then auto hide once it isn't ?
If so it looks like this would be the best method for me!

    Cheers

google search usb touchpads. find your preference by size or functions. I use

    thx autockr.

sounds very promising to use touchpad as input device. touchscreen is to dangerous while driving (to much focussed during navigation) and too far away to reach quietly with fingers (with the slighest bumps).

still the question remains open if it is possible to use notebook touchbad via usb/serial device and software? anybody knows?

if not where can i get one shipped europe (switzerland) not paying the same amount as for device?

You will probably spend AT LEAST 2x what you initially budget for your CarPC Project!
