Hi, I have been trying to rig up my steering wheel controls to my carputer but I haven't been able to get it working. I have a carbuttons module that I ordered off madhacker.org assuming that it would do the job. The media controls seem to run from the controls to the back of the LCD unit in the top middle of the dashboard and connect via a 14-pin flat red connector, using only a couple of wires on the connector. I have metered each of these wires between itself and ground and I been able to measure resistance changes for all the buttons on the steering wheel controls. The problem I have is that the controls does seem to go open circuit at all. The normal resistance state of the 3 wires in question is 10.7k, which jumps up on button presses.
Here is what I have worked out if anyone else is interested:
14-pin Molex Connector:
Measurement of resistance between Beige Wire and Ground :
No Button Pressed - 10.7k
Top Right Button Pressed - 17.6k
Bottom Button Pressed - 17.6k
Scroller Pressed - 17.6k
Measurement of resistance between Grey Wire and Ground :
No Button Pressed - 10.7k
Top Left Button Pressed - 17.6k
Volume - Pressed - 17.6k
Scroller Pressed - 17.6k
Measurement of resistance between Brown Wire and Ground :
No Button Pressed - 10.7k
Volume + Pressed - 17.6k
Scroller Pressed - 17.6k
They don't seem to jump to different resistance values at all and If they do, They must differ by a very small amount.
Does anyone have any useful info that might help me with this setup. It's wrecking my head
On the setups I've seen, the buttons don't switch a particular resistance to ground, but they do switch a particular resistance between two of the wires. Have you tried checking resistance between gray and brown for instance? Also, usually there is still some resistance value even when no buttons are pressed (i.e., they don't generally go open circuit) so that's normal.
