    The Smallest Keyboard/Mouse Combo

    We'll file this under the "It works great for me, so why not share with the world". I don't take credit for the work, just piecing it together into one script.

    Since my In-dash 7" Touchscreen bit the dust, and is now just a 7" screen, I had to come up with a quick alternative for mouse control....

    Then I thought, why stop there?

    Here it is.....Doesn't look like much, just a USB Keypad, but add the following AutoHotKey Script and you now have an (almost) fully functional keyboard and mouse.

    Here's how it works.....

    The Numlock controls what mode you're in.
    NumLock On = Typing Mode
    NumLock Off = Mouse Mode

    The typing method is the same as your cell phone (no predictive, just straight characters)

    Layout For Typing Mode.
    (might seem upsidedown, but it makes sense if you're used to a cell phone)

    Timeout is set for 1 second so just tap away at the key until you see the character you're looking for.

    NumLock = Mouse/Keyboard Toggle
    / = backspace
    * = nothing currently
    - = ScrollWheelUp
    + = ScrollWheelDown
    Enter = Enter
    7 = ( , ) , [ , ] , 1
    8 = a , b , c , 2 , @
    9 = d , e , f , 3 , #
    4 = g , h , i , 4 , $
    5 = j , k , l , 5 , %
    6 = m , n , o , 6 , ^
    1 = p , q , r , s , &
    2 = t , u , v , 8 , ~
    3 = w , x , y , z , 9, '
    0 = [Space] , 0
    . = \ , . : ; ! ?

    Layout For Mouse Mode.
    There is acceleration built into this so it will speed up gradually as the mouse moves.

    NumLock = Mouse/Keyboard Combo
    / = Back
    * = Forward
    - = ScrollWheelUp
    + = ScrollWheelDown
    Enter = Enter
    7 = MouseUpLeft
    8 = MouseUp
    9 = MouseUpRight
    4 = MouseLeft
    5 = Center Button Click
    6 = MouseRight
    1 = MouseDownLeft
    2 = MouseDown
    3 = MouseDownRight
    0 = Left Button Click
    . = Right Button Click
    Enter = Enter

    I currently have mine attached right to my visor for easy reach with one hand, and once you practice (in your driveway) you never have to take your eyes off the road.

    Attached is the script and the compiled EXE.

    Have fun.

    Hey, this thing seems to be great !!

    Anyway, I would have the possibility to use one button of the mini-keyboard as the "ESC" key. Is that possible ? More generally, how could I programme the key bidding as I want ?

    I noticed the file KeyboardMouseCombo.ahk. How should it be used ?

    THANKS A LOT !!

    www.autohotkey.com

    It can do just about anything as far as remapping and desktop control. What I love most is it's simplicity.

    For instance, to do your request:

    Download autohotkey.
    Open notepad
    Type the following -
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    Numpad5::Escape
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    Save the file as SOMEFILENAME.AHK
    Double click the AHK file.

    Done....Have fun!!

    Thanks a lot guy !!

    Another question, can you show me (with a photo if you want) where you have attached the mini-keyboard ?

    bye

    ------------

    PROBLEM. I dont' know why, but when I modify the .AHK file, there are no changes in the script behaviour. No matter how I modify the file, even with an empy .AHK file, the script has the same behaviour.

    Should I reboot ? Perhaps some sort of in-memory configuration remains since the first script launch.

    --------

    Another thing. I've tried to use it with Road Runner. I noticed some problems... have you ever tried ??

    thanks !!

    The keypad is attached with velcro (temporary) to my sun visor on the driver's side.

    When you modify the AHK file and save it go down to the H icon in the system tray and right-click.......then choose Reload This Script.

    Nope. I've never played with RoadRunner but it it's shortcut keys are standard windows keys, it will work fine. It takes some getting used to, but the help file is your friend.

    another thought about this.....

    I have a MadCatz PS3 wireless and a Smart Cat Touchpad (as I have fat fingers which are not so good for fiddly work on a touch screen)
    These two cover most of my needs. But as we know the downside of these small keyboards is things like windows key, escape, etc.

    So i was thinking is this
    - retain the small keyboard as they are great for typing
    - replace the touchpad with usb numeric keyboard for mouse movement
    - remap the the non changing keys (/ * - +) with those things that you need....e.g
    copy, paste, cut, windows key - all of these will be available in either mouse or typing mode (have to remove them from the mousescript)

    NumpadDiv::send ^c
    NumpadMult::send ^v
    NumpadSub::send ^x
    NumpadAdd::LWin

    then you can use the numeric keys in the typing part of this script for other things or if you want you can use it for typing as per original script with some slight modifications
