I use a slightly modified Belkin Nostromo Speedpad to control my carputer, can use any of it's buttons for any key/or macro/or mouse control.

I've heard touchscreens aren't all that they are cracked up to be and that something that gives more tactile feedback such as a keypad would be better for input into a carputer. The reason being so you can operate it more easily by touch and don't have to take your eyes off the road. With a touchscreen, you have to momentarily take your eyes off the road to make sure you are about to press the right thing on the screen.

The reasoning at least does seem sound. Anybody here tried both approaches and can confirm or rebute this?

I would myself build a button interface and place it around the screen or even within the sterring wheel.

Anyone ever use one of these? I would like to hear your thoughts.

Gyration makes some pretty nice RF wireless products, and I'm testing a more basic version of the setup above. I would love to have this in my car seeing how that remote control has every button I would ever need such as volume, play, ff, rewind...etc...

The kicker is that it has a built-in gyroscope so that you can use it as a mouse without needed to put it on a mouse pad or other surface. Just wave it around in the air and the cursor moves, pretty cool. Their keyboard is impresive too, really small and solid.

The only drawback is their basic keyboard/mouse combo is about $100, and the multimedia combo above goes for about $170. I rationalize it because I no longer need to buy a touch-screen, so I can save a little money from buying a non-touch screen and apply that cash towards this.

    Thoughts, comments?

This is pretty nice for only 8$ shipped!

Has ne1 put a touchscreen over a PS1 screen? love to hear if that works and for how much. Thanx!

I have the keyboard/mouse combo. The Gyration products are really quite good, the mouse works quite well. However I've found that a trackball is nicer to use as it is always in the same place. I'll have both in the car. The keyboard is pretty good, but I wish they had a version with backlit keys.

The mutimedia wand looks really cool :-)
