    Sammy Controller Mod

Does anyone know for sure if a USB computer keyboard and a Playstation 2 keyboard are interchangable ?

If they are, I will volunteer to buy one of these and do some research (surgery) to see what's up.

    Thanks for the info -

Hey Brian, here is the research/surguery you were requesting.. and Then Some...

I bought one of these controllers, hoping it would have the keyboards circuit board seperate from the board of the joysticks and sure enough that is how it came.

I then took it a few steps further, and combined it with a mini usb trackball and a usb hub for a powerful multi function controller.

check out this url for a step by step pictorial.. maybe Ill write up a description of the proccess, but you can get the jist of it right from the photos.

since this is my first post, alost of people might consider me a newbie, but dont be fooled. I am more of a DO-er than a Talk-er. I know my way around a soldering iron and I am not afraid to take a challenge of making something useful out of a couple blobs of plastic and a circuit board. heh.

just check out my mame cabinet I built.

    Mini Keyboard Mod

I knew what I wanted to do with it the second I laid eyes on it.
I wanted to combine this with a micro trackball and a usb hub, and that is just what I did.

with a lot of plastic welding, some Lathe work in the shop(for buttons) and some bondo, I was well on my way.
I had to really butcher the mouses innards to make them more compact, and struggled with some of the finer 'rewiring' that had to go on.
I actually wrecked the first USB hub, and junked that for a different type with a layout that proved to be better in the end, by leaving me with two free ports to plug in additional stuff (jump drives, etc).

its a pretty tight fit in there, and it is certainly not perfect, but it works pretty good.

    my complaints are:
1: the keyboards buttons are soft and mushy.. my PDA has a micro keyboard less than half the size of this, and my fat thumbs have no problem with it because the buttons are hard and well spaced. this one is a struggle to type with, because there is no positive "click" when you hit a letter, and you really have to press it firmly to get it to type.
    2: it isnt wireless..
yeah, I know thats not much of a complaint. but hey. if it were wireless, I would be psyched.
I considered trying to make it happen, but I would have ended up with a wiring nightmare, and it would have been a much bigger blob with batteries and a hodgepodge transmitter..
(and ultimately, I may have never finished it..)
3:there are a few places where you can see the seam between the parts, where I didnt use enough bondo or add enough plastic. usually I would have stuck with it until it was totally seamless, but I was losing patience with it.
this of course isnt a complaint with the sammy part or anything, but rather with my own craftsmanship..
I know I can do better..

    any questions?
