Touchscreen input from standard in-dash video deck?

    Hi there,

If I just install an in-car video deck from, say, BestBuy, could I somehow get the touchscreen output?

Why I ask: I could use a standard touch-screen dash system like this one and use the audio in, and video in, then just use my netbook. But I'd also need the touchscreen output for the interface.

Are there any dash systems that provide a touchscreen output or that are particularly hackable?

Here are 2 I'm looking at simply because they are available nearby:
    JVC
    Clarion

The touchscreen on those is internal only and will only send commands to its internal controller, not to an external computer. This is evident int he fact that there's no USB output to go to the computer, this is how the commands would be sent out.
What you need to do is get a touchscreen overlay to go over top of it, this would have a USB cable to plug into your computer and that should work. But it wouldn't work for the internal software in the deck.

I have seen a couple places that carry "touch kits" in array of sizes. The only two issues I see would be fitment of the second touch screen, I say second because more than likely you would have to keep the "stock" one to control the radio. With both screens in place you might have a clearance issue with the faceplate or housing. The second issue would be more of a question, Would two touch screens work layered on top of each other?

If you do it I want to see it so please post some pics!

    Hi guys,

Actually, it's most complex than I thought. The external inputs for video are disabled when in motion, do you'd also need an override. That kinda adds an extra step that makes it unpleasant.
In terms of touchscreen... It's actually just as cool to use an iPod or iTouch that is next to the screen via BlueTooth to control it. So there's a work around of sorts for that part at least.

You might be able to deactivate parking sensor by connecting it to ground available in many head units, but i don't know if it is an illegal doing in your country to have video while driving.

You might want to consider to do something similar to this
    http://gsmserver.com/shop/car/naviga..._on_cs9100.php

    http://technopark.en.alibaba.com/pro...ox_CS9100.html

It would be nice to control CarPC instead of a navigation box,i don't know if it were possible,
using microcontroller to translate Head unit's protocol in between, but again i don't have a knowledge of it (i have a skypine and wunde proud navigation black box which is the exact same thing with CS9100 also a brand new carpc using atom)

The headunit doesn't work on magic, the only way for it to know if your car is moving depends on how it's installed.

You're wanting to run your PC through your already existing in-dash touchscreen, right? Or a Pioneer AVIC or similar video/ts deck.

I know what you're wanting to do, and no it won't work like that. :P I'm looking to do the same thing. The best and cheapest option would be to just build a carPC. But if you need the CD/DVD slot in the dash then your options are limited or VERY expensive. Otherwise, you'd stick it in the glove box, console, or beside the seat...which I don't want to do since storage is already at a minimum in my car.

If anyone knows of a 7" Double DIN Mini-ITX enclosure with just the TS w/ CD/DVD...PLEEEASE let me know.

Modify a deck-AV system with touch screen

I have the same plan to modify my deck system (Kenwood DDX7029) so that my computer (either using a mac mini or mini PC) could be hooked up to the monitor for navigation, slingbox or other web functions. I don't want to do along the way of replacing the monitor with a Lilliput monitor as I still want to keep the original DVD/Radio/Rear Camx2/HDTV capacity.

Since the existing monitor is with touch screen and of course I know I couldn't hijack it to control my mac/PC. Yet, I am quite sure that most of the touch screen features (about 4-5 years ago) are based on 4- or 5- wired resistive panel. If I could disconnect the wired control and connect it to a USB touch screen controller (I have got one at USD$25 locally in Hong Kong), I should be able to make use of the touch screen to control my mac/PC.

I haven't tried out the project yet and would like to know whether you guys have any relevant experience. Of course, I can still control my deck AV system with the remote.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    regards,
    Terence
