    Dell keyboard for USB volume

I saw an old post about this while searching but I thought I would post a refresher. I am in the process of building my 2nd carpc, and was trying to figure out a better (small) usb volume knob that wasn't as delicate as the wheel mouse / volumouse solution. At work we use dell's and use the dell sk-8135 keyboard. I asked one of our IT guys if they had any extra ones with a stuck / missing key and he gave me one for free! Here is a pic:

After removing like 30 screws and removing the 2 ribbon wires for the keys, you are left with 2 small circuit boards....One is a nice little 2 port usb hub and the other can be used as your volume knob! I tested this in Windows 7 and it controls the master volume without any software necessary. You can find these keyboards on Ebay for really cheap, and the small form factor is hard to beat. Here is a pic what I was left with:

the keys around the volume knob, those happen to be the media controls? like play , pause, stop, next, fwd, back, ect? if so im looking for something just like this to control media functions from the dash. sort of like a head unit under the touch screen but not a real head unit. just looking for a way to do volume controls and media controls with buttons and not just with the touchscreen.

stupid question but only asking because i don't know. but does this still show up as a keyboard in windows? and will this interfere with running another usb keyboard. I really like this option to control media, volume, and have two usb ports in the front bezel of my dash with the screen.

well i ended up getting one of these keyboards off ebay for around 9$ shipped. haven't got to open it up or use it yet but was wondering is there any programs or anything to be able to program the hot keys if there is any so that i can make more front pannel buttons. if not then ill just wire push buttons to the pins that activate the controls of the keyboard i wish to use. things like the arrow keys for scrolling by a push of a button or the page up/down keys, the enter key, windows start menu button, and possibly some keys that will open media player and internet with just the push of a button.

There is a program called "Girder" that is great for doing what you want to do. However I think its a little over-kill. You might just be able to download the software drivers for the keyboard itself and set the hotkeys from there.
