    touchscreen ribbon cable question

this is maybe just a newbie question but is there a standard for the traces of the ribbon cable for touchscreens? i know that there are 3 different types of touchscreens but again are the ribbon cables in their respective categories the same?

so i am attempting to integrate a 10" touchscreen into a 350z, anyway i am wanting to run a little different setup then just a carputer. since we are a car audio shop that is our main goal here so i am using an alpine mobile hub pro so that i can get all of alpines aftermarket audio interfaces and extras. anyway alpine only offers a 7" touchscreen and well thats not good enough for us ha ha, so what i want to do is put this 10" screen to run the computer as well as allow the touchscreen work with the alpine unit. so i am gonna tuck one of the alpines screens in the dash so you cant see it and then basically pipe the 10" screens touch panel into the 7". some of you may have seen the WIMAX smartcars or lincoln navigators through clearwire and Intell, well we did those cars and use a plainar 12" screen in those and they use a 9 or 10 wire? ribbon cable by which the alpine does not, it uses a 4 wire ribbon cable which im thinking is a resistive type?? so when lilliput says a 4 or 5 wire touch screen are they talking about usb or ribbon cables?

4 or 5 wire is the resistive type of cable. I don't really think it will work to simply piggyback the screens together, although I've never tried it tbo. I think you'll need to substitute the 10" for the 7". If you match the ribbons and type of screen, you ought to be okay, although I really can't say for sure. Also, calibration may be a problem.

they are a four wire resistive cable. Your problem is not going to be matching the cables its going to be differences in screen size. Resistive touch from a 7" screen will work for about a 6"-8" screen with calibration but more then that and the software will not be able to calibrate input to match touch.

is it because the resistance values would be to "high" or "low" and those are outside the spectrum of the alpine unit? i guess so that means it would only calibrate the inner 8" or the bottom right 8"???

I'm not 100% sure what would happen but yea thats the reason. I would imagine either you would lose a section of screen but you could also have an incorrect scaling factor (clicks below the center line are too low, and above are too high).

ok cool well i will still try and see how off it is...cause frankly most of the buttons are in the center of the screen and so i can use the remote for the others...and hey lets face it this is all just having fun doing somethin the manufacture says you cant lol
