best bets for dash cam recording

I have been searching and not really finding anything difinitive. What are my best bets for setting up a dash cam or cams to record the world as I drive? Plenty of people are interested in doing this so please help us all to get this going.

I think my thread is still on the first page of the "input devices" titled something about pc's, cameras, and integration. It defines pros and cons of some methods of recording and has a couple camera links in there as well.

If you want a discussion on different cameras, someone else might need to chime in (soundman, don't you work with cameras a lot and have that knowledge?).

If you want a general guideline for hooking up the cameras, a little insight of how you might want it would help. Do you care about quality? cpu hit? webcam? composite? lots of options, but we're here to help!

I usually go for cheaper equipment. I am running an atom 330, would I need to upgrade to get a good quality stream? I'd like the system to be useful for capturing interesting moments, and documenting any "incidents" that might occur.

I did see that other thread and that's what got me thinking about it.

More people probably would've seen that other thread (my thinking is most who post set their subscriptions automatically to those threads).

Anyways, I can't really help ya out yet, as that's why I started the other one. I'm sure someone will help out though. The one thing I did remember was that either recording and/or viewing the cameras will cause a cpu hit regardless.

Here a suggestion: Figure out WHY you want to record first. That will save you a TON of time, money and problems later.

    1. If all you want is documentation for insurance purposes, buy an all-in-one hardware solution, mounted it and forget about it. There is NO PC based solution that will work as well, be as reliable and be cost competitive.
    2. If you only need a single camera, and you want to be able to see what it sees, and record it, there are a number of good solutions, several of them free. Mostly depends on if you want integration into a specific frontend, or only a need stand-alone application. Using a webcam allows for easier wiring and setup, better compatibility with most systems. The trade-off can be that some will have a greater impact on system performance than others.
    3. If you need multiple cameras and true dvr capabilities, as well as real time monitoring, your choices become more limited, more complex and much more expensive. The other thread goes into that in some detail.

If you can live without the gee-whiz factor of viewing the "live' video, you can get off pretty cheap. Otherwise, accept that it's going to be just like most carPC projects....more complex, more expensive and arguably more fun than you originally planned.

I don't currently use any front end. I just run windows 7 and set winamp to play before I get rolling.

I guess you are talking about one of those go pro stand alone things right? They are cool enough but, I'd like to integrate with my pc because I have it there. I also have a scantool usb thingy and I read I could get a mpg overlay and gps overlay with this minicam program right?

If I got a usb webcam and minicam I could have a pretty good shot at getting this working? What cam should I get and how tasking will this be for my atom 330?

I don't need to view the live stream, just want to save the stream incase I get hit or if I want to watch a near miss replay.

VERY nice....just note the 5 amp power draw. Probably not anything you'd want to leave running when the engine's off, that's for sure. A lot of very cool features, though. You'd could definitely build one heck of a surviellence system with that as the foundation. Any idea on price?
