    Joycon exc BMW E46

Hey there. Im trying to get this damn thing working but things arnt going as smoothly as hoped.
I have hooked the joycon to the ibus radio connector wire, and do get input from the steering wheel buttons.... Occasionally. The volume buttons more or less work but the rest of the buttons take ages to get any response, and when/if they finally do respond, the data is not the same when repeated.

I hope I'm missing something simple, as the ui is far from user friendly.

Note: I have tried changing the position of the resistor wheel on the joycon with no noticeable effect.

After trying the volume buttons (which more or less programmed) on my android tablet, the results were horrible. Input is detected after 6 or 7 presses, and then the button seems to "hold" and the volume drops all the way to the bottom/top

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Rob.

The Steering wheel buttons on the E46 are not resistive driven. so it's unlikely adjusting the resitor wheel will do anything.

TBH you are probably better off using an iBus interface (search Resler) and use one of the many programs that convert that to keystrokes.

If you are using one of the FrontEnds on here, most will already have a plugin available for iBus.

Also with an iBus interface you can get much more info out of the car and also control some other things as well ;-)

Hey enforcer, thanks for your reply. I am aware that the E46 controls are not resistive, the joycon exc fully supports ibus.

I was looking into the resler interface but found very little/no information about using this with android (I'm using an android tablet). Also, as I now have the joycon (and it wasn't cheap!) I would prefer to get it working.

I have seen YouTube videos where the joycon appears to work flawlessly with the E46 , and mine does in fact respond to the signals, just very slowly as if there was some massive lag being caused. As I know this interface is capable of working properly, I assume I must have missed some setting, or maybe have a faulty unit (more likely bad settings) .

    Thanks,
    Rob.

Oh, iBus and Android, that would be interesting.

Not sure why yours is not working if you have seen it working well.

Maybe try it on a windows PC and see if it performs any differently

Thats the thing, the device must be programmed using a windows computer.
The only thing I can think of is that the laptop I used is really old, I mean old... It has a floppy disk port... I may have to try and boot windows from a live USB on my current laptop and see if I have more luck. (I have fedora installed).

Either that or some hidden setting in the software.

Maybe someone who has a Joycon running on a BMW can chime in then.

As I have gone the Resler iBus route I can only really offer advise form experience on that.

    Good luck

I was just thinking about this. I'm about to install a samsung tab S in my car, running digitalCar frontend. I already have a joycon just sitting in my garage since I'm taking my carpc out. It would be great to have it control android features. I've already checkout a couple Bluetooth remotes most can do play pause next and previous but for some reason they cannot trigger "ok google now"

I'm in the exact same boat. I have an E46 with the nav unit and I'm struggling with this so much right now it's ****ing me off. I got the exact same results as you. I feel like the iBus system is expecting instantaneous replies from the hardware it's talking to and because it's not wired such that it's getting the expected reply, it's behaving the way we're seeing. Question is, how do we wire it all up properly? I can't seem to find any clear and precise instructions on this anywhere. I'm just glad to see I'm not the only one having this issue.

The iBus system does not need a response form the device connected for the steering wheel buttons to work.

The steering buttons just send a serial signal down the iBus line, if a nother control unit reads that and does something with it all well and good, if the signal is totally ignored, it doesn't care.

How the Joycon is interpreting these signals and then sending the correct command to the USB line I don't know.

Most of the buttons actually send 3 signals, pressed, hold and released. Maybe the Joycon software is struggling with that.

Maybe your connection to the iBus line is not 100% and you're getting signal inteference.

Is the connection to your IBus wire good? Where did you pull it from? Also do you have the buttons set for long presses? That could be why it takes so long to register

If you want, I can post some pictures of my setup later on today
