    Computer as the remote??

Heres a question. Most people put an IR reciever on the PC and use a remote to send a signal. What If I wanted the PC to send the signal to my headunit? That way I can use PC controls to change inputs, control my radio ect, instead of using a separate remote.

Basically use a program to scan a signal, and assign it to a button to control the radio. Like source, mute, ect.

    Ideas? Comments?

this seems to be a solution, BUT I dunno how I would integrate that into an application.

Im sure it is possible, like the others said, you can ether buy a unit to send and recive IR signals, or you could build one. Like you said you can train grider to recive a signal from your remote that came with the HU and duplicate that signal for transmitting back to the head unit. havent really messed around with it yet but im sure it can be done

Erazor, I built one of the original serial UIRT's a few years ago and have had it working very well as a reciever since but have never got round to testing the emitters as i just use the all-in-one remote i use for my PC to do everything.

There is a newer version than mine but i didnt keep up with the design as mine hs worked fine. Will dig up some info when i get home from work if the info is no longer on the internet (don't think the UIRT link above has info for DIY)

Just thinking after seeign a link off the page posted by -B-e-n- (http://winlirc.sourceforge.net/controlbywire.html) that maybe you could simply miss out the IR emitters and remove the reciever from your device and wire direct up to save having to loacte an IR transmitter anywhere.

Or it might be better to remotly mount your device reciver in a box with your emitters pointing direct at it. might make it more reliable - especially in sunlight.

Other way would be to use a relay board and hook it directly to the tactile switches in your stereo - not really a hard job if you have a nice small soldering iron.
