After more web surfing i found the answer, apparently synaptics make most of the laptop touchpads and I found this (http://www.synaptics.com/decaf/utilities/tp-intf2-4.PDF) on their website, it explains everything you need to know about synaptics touchpads and how they connect via serial or PS/2 etc....!! YAY

Did this work out for you? I had the same idea cause I had an old laptop laying around. However, I decided to buy a PS2 external touchpad for $10 and it took care of everything. The thing is that I found and even cooler device after the fact - a remote control made for presenters that has a fully functional mouse and runs on RF.

Thats not where I bought it but it's the first thing to come up in google. It's a flex pointer. Notice it has a laser pointer built in. Hopefully I'll stay out of trouble
