    Question LONG IDE Cables

Ok I have an internal Laptop DVD drive. I know there are adaptors that will convert it to IDE. Are there any IDE cables out there that are EXTRA EXTRA LONG? I need about a 20ft IDE cable. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I would stay under 24" with IDE... after that you can run into problems. Your best bet is to get a IDE to Firewire (or USB2.0) bridge adapter to allow you to remote the drive away from the computer.

Well as jasonsp6 said you could take that route....
Or if you want to go w/ IDEs you can... but it takes some work.

There was an article i read somewhere that a guy made them 34ft or something like that. The way he did it was to use 5strands of Cat5 networking cable. He then created his own IDE cable after connecting the IDE plugs to the Cat5, important thing here is making sure you get pin1-40 to match up exactly....

    Hope this helps..

I have heard of that too... was it a member of this board?

I would imagine it would work well as long as every signal had a gound as it's opposite in a pair... I don't know how much, if any at all the IDE bus bandwith would be effected.

If you want to go that route - let us know how it works. If not, you can find USB 2.0 to IDE adapters inside external USB hard drive cases found on eBay for around $15 +shipping.

    Good luck on your project!!

    Just wondering...
Is that part of a home theater PC?

Nope, it's part of my CarPC when I was testing it.

I just installed my 2nd CarPC in my new car yesterday and tested it tonight, yeah yeah, it works, well some of it. More tests to come.

Wanna see the IDE in my new car, well a piece of it...casue the rest is hidden until the glove box.
